I am really unlucky (or Enworld martial artists help me part 2)...

Synicism: Completely agree. You said what I was trying to, both in terms of sparring and in terms of the benefits and dangers of trying to teach students how to deal with weapon attacks. And yeah -- if a guy with a gun asks for your wallet, give him your wallet. :)

LGod: Correct me if I'm wrong, but the last time that I checked, Hatsumi Soke was not actually a living national treasure. Was this bestowed upon him recently? No offense is intended -- I am remembering an old newsgroup conversation where somebody said that he was, somebody else corrected the first person, and somebody finally clarified that Hatsumi Soke was respected a great deal by the Japanese government, but not officially considered a national living treasure. This was several years ago, however, and the facts may have changed.

Hmm....

All I have to say is this:

Most if not all martial arts are based off of a philosophy. That philosophy is usually more than "We are people who like to know how to hurt other people as quickly and effectively as possible." Find the art whose philosophy most closely matches your own.

I dabble in philosophical Taoism, so T'ai Chi was the natural choice for me. I don't mind needing to study for a couple decades before what I'm learning becomes combat-effective, since I don't plan on getting into any combat.

Darius, I am unclear what you are disagreeing with me about. If you would be more clear perhaps I could come up with a better response....from your post it appears you do not understand my positions.

I did not expect nor ask for a reponse. I stated very clearly what my thoughts and observations are.
In the article I pointed you to read about Ninpo not being recognized as a koryu you thought that was a small organization?

Nihon Kobudo Shinkokai is one of the largest japenese goverment organizations that recognizes and verifies old school Ryuha.
Dr. Hatsumi was asked many years ago to provide documentation of some of his lineage for admittance to the Kobudo Shinkokai, perhaps the most reliable of the major organizations of traditional Japanese martial arts, and according to Donn Draeger, in a conversation to me, he was not able to provide documentation which proved his lineage to their satisfaction. Thus, there are uncertain areas in Dr. Hatsumi's lineage.
The Katori-Shinto-ryu and the Kashima-Shinryu, two of the oldest classical bugei schools in Japan, are currently in their 20th and 19th generations. The Owari branch of the Yagyu Shinkage-ryu is in its 21st. The Jikishin-kageryu is in its 18th. All of these schools date back to the late 15th or mid 16th century, the very dawn of the organized bugei ryuha phenomenon. How is it that the Togakure-ryu has passed through 34 generations. And why has the Kumogakure-ryu passed though only 14?

This is all outside the discussion of this topic. It is irrelevent to the original question posted by Zdanboy.

I had also heard that Hatsumi had become a living national treasure but have been unable to verify it at all. He is greatly respected in Japan though. When e-mailed to Hatsumi san I get no response. I have e-mailed him in Japenese about it as he reads no english e-mails. Maybe he is maybe he is not Point me in the right direction to verify it. It is unimportant to this discussion and the topic at hand.

synasism---I agree
Tacky--- hahahahahaha
Lgodamus ---- You never responded to me about your teacher in the old thread. No big deal. I know your teacher and know that your learning good stuff from him. He is a cop (or was), you don't survive long if your philosophy and technique are flawed in that environment.

Merak --- Cool man. I agree.

Later all,
Darius

Darius...uh .sorry I didnt respond in the old thread...my computer died and I have only been back online for a little while..
N E way...I am not sure what I said you didnt like about ninpo.
Also the national treasure thing , Like I said I saw in a newsletter. Just for reference I am with Ed Martin , and you are right he is not one of the ones who waters things down.
I too am a little peeved at the political situation in the Bujinkan recently but there isnt anything I can do about it, so I just train and learn what I can and be thankfull that I do have good folks to train with...
