I currently play x edition and I do or don't buy 3pp stuff. A POLL

What do you use in play/allow in play?

3pp adventures, campaigns, and settings: Yes. This is pretty much a must as anything out by WotC in these categories usually puts me to sleep with a vengeance.

3pp classes, races, feats, spells, anything rules-like: No way jose. Too many bad experiences.

I'm wondering what people's current buying habits are regarding third party publishers (3pp), in relation to the edition that they play.

Thanks for your answers.

I really enjoy 3pp. I use it a lot in my home campaigns in addition to a lot of the WotC books put out. My players are not 3 pp collectors at all, so they get annoyed with me when they fight a monster or NPC that has a class that they don't know of.

My fav 3 pp is Green Ronin for their supplements, Privateer Press for IK, Paizo for Pathfinder since that's what we're using, and a few others for adventures and settings to give me ideas.

My fav 3 pp is Green Ronin for their supplements.

Oh, yeah! The Advanced Bestiary and three Master class books by Steve Kenson (i.e, Psychic's Handbook, Shaman's Handbook, and Handbook), along with Artificer's Handbook (Mystic Eye Games), Book of Templates (Silverthorne/Goodman Games), Book of Iron Might (Malhavoc), WOTC's Unearthed Arcana, and Poisoncraft (Blue Devil) are the cornerstone of my non-core DND supplements and my house rules/tweaks (along with Sean Reynold's Fewer Absolutes. Based on the Trailblazer preview, I think Trailblazer will be a new addition to the list.

Green Ronin's Book of Fiends (for the Thamaturge and inspiration), Book of the Righteous (for the Holy Warrior and just inspiration), Cavalier's Handbook, and Unholy Warrior's Handbook are also great.

Other than Fiery Dragon's great counter sets, I don't use any 3pp in my 4e games. If something came along that looked like it would be useful, I'd check it out, but for now, I have almost all of the 4e products and they give me way more gaming material than I'll probably ever use.

I have all the GR books you've mentioned. Book of Fiends is one of my fav monster manuals though my favorites are the Monsternomicon I and II from Privateer Press, but every demon and devil comes from BoF that I use.

I voted 3.5 and allow 3pp, but that's misleading. I use 3pp stuff when crafting my adventures but the player's aren't allowed to touch that stuff with a 10-meter cattleprod.

I'm wondering what people's current buying habits are regarding third party publishers (3pp), in relation to the edition that they play.

Core books include all WotC books titled "Players Handbook", "Monster Manual", and "Dungeon Masters Guide".

The DM will decide whichever other books are core for their game.

Any other book is optional (regardless of publisher), and can be used as source or background material.

Thanks Korgoth! I had no idea that 3pp existed for earlier editions! The only publisher I was aware of was Judge's Guild.

Sure... currently there are Brave Halfling Publishing (OSRIC and 0e), Expeditious Retreat Press (OSRIC), Goblinoid Games (OSRIC in addition to their LL line), Geoffrey McKinney (Carcosa, a 0e supplement), to name a few. Not to mention print magazines like Fight On! and Knockspell.

If you want to supplement your old school play, there's probably more available now than ever before in terms of 3pps.

I haven't seen any 3pp stuff for 4e yet, though I haven't really been looking, as I got so burned with 3e 3pp stuff. IME, stuff that had good ideas was usually poorly balanced, and well-balanced stuff was bland and boring*. Not that I was a very devoted connosieur, mind you.

* - I.e. "hey, this is cool, but are they on crack?" and "wow, this is, um, okay, I guess, but why would I bother?"
