I'm curious as to how Anakin built Threepio and the pod racer from scratch when there is no craft skill or crafting rules.

Anakin has "Mechanics" (fix, build and disable machines, droids, and other electronic gizmos) as a class skill. Probably focus in it to (I'm good at fixing things)

Since there are no skill ranks, I have to ask... what do PrC requirements look like?
I don't have the book (and I'm quite jealous of those that do) but I'd say likely that skill ranks have been replaced by trained and/or Skill Focus in those skills.

I was given to believe by the designers posts on the WOTC boards there was no actual mechanic to build such things, ie nothing to say how much the materials would cost or how long it would take to actually build a droid vs how long it would take to build a blaster vs how long to build a Star Destroyer.

PrCs frequently require minimum character levels, training in a certain skill, and/or talents from certain talent trees. For example, the Bounty Hunter requires character level 7+, trained in Survival, and two talents from the Awareness tree.

Note that Anakin doesn't really create Threepio nor his podracer "on screen," if you will. I've never really thought that Star Wars needed an advanced crafting system...if a PC with Mechanics wants to make his own ship or droid or whatever, I'd just have him shell out the money for it (to reflect the cost of raw materials) and say he made it himself. No problem.

Any reasoning for this?

Probably because some people like to think of the skills as almost like disciplines of study, or because some prefer to have all the skills to fit the template of one-word names. Doesn't bother me personally, but I can see where it would. Maybe "Force Use" and "Computer Use" skills would have been better for that?

I dunno... which is move evocative of the movie(s)? "Force Use", or "Use The Force (... Luke!)"?

Anyone nay-saying Use The Force just wants to be difficult, IMO. :D
