I got to playtest Castles and Crusades!

WSmith,

Never say "Never." :D

When can we see a list of the subjects that the playtesters are allowed to speak on? I'm hoping next week sometime, because I'd like to ask specifically what points will draw someone looking for the "first edition feel" that many old-timers crave without returning to some of the clunkier systems in 1E? (init and weapon vs. armor come to mind when I say this.)

Henry!

how many times must I say that I NEVER used weapons vs. armor, and that a simple d10 roll for initiative was mu standard. Who cares what the rules say? Common sense should prevail. If someone wants more "realism" thay can jack around with armor and weapon comparison, but I never used it, and I rue ever being talked into it by "realism" proponents around me back in the days I was writing those rules. The same goes for psionics

Heh,
Gary

Henry the Troll Lords posted the list on their boards for those that has signed the NDA. I will say even though I am not thrilled by the game. They did a nice job on the combat.

No GAry is writing it for C&C. in fact as far as I know there wont even be a conversion to LA for the castle, just the C&C version.
Ken

Correct!

The LA game system would not mesh well with a class and level based castle-dungeons adventure module. Putting in LA game stats would mess things up and be a bother for players of either system.

Ciao,
Gary

Forgive me Gary, I know not what I do. :)

Seriously, I didn't say you used them, I was pointing them out because, whether you & yours used them or not, to quote the Prego commericals, "It's in there." And not as alternatives, but written in the PHB and DMG as if they are the default systems. I never used them, either, (using simple d10's modified by no weapon speed but including spellcasting segment time) but I asked in order to get info on how C&C differs from 1E other than the statement, "It's different, yet similar." Since we grunts can't see the list that Davis cleared, I'm hoping someone will take the initiative (no pun intended) and give us anything he cleared that HASN'T been covered.

For all the great rules in OAD&D, I am sympathetic that those two offenders are the ones dredged up to you the most. :) Sorry about that.

Once and For all OD&D is not 1e... OD&D is the basic set, the old red, blue, etc... boxed sets.....

No, actually, those are typically referred to as "Basic" D&D or BECM D&D (for the Basic, Expert, Companion, and Master Sets); OD&D was the original D&D in the white or brown box from 1974, and the old original Greyhawk expansions for Thieves, Paladins, etc.

I used "OAD&D" above instead of "1e" because that's the term Gary typically uses for it.

I have never heard the term "BECM D&D" in my 18 yrs of gaming, but I have heard "Basic" D&D reffered to as "OD&D" almost exclusively for years. Even at some of the largest "Basic" D&D fansites on the web refer to it as "OD&D".

Anyway, no arguments here, just stating the terminology as I have seen and heard it over and over again :)

Awww...Henry,

You know i was just using your post as a straw man to vent against those gamers who complained about those rules rather than simply dropping them and getting on with things :\

We never bothered factoring in wepaons speeds either, unless it was a critical one-on-one duel.

Whatever was clunky and got in the way of enjoyable play for all concerned was simply ignored. It amazed me that everyone else didn't do the same in their own campaigns. When I was speaking to a large audience at one GenCon and a questin about rules was posed, I answered "outside" the book.
Several persons in the audience looked shocked, and one blurted out, "But that isn't what the rules say!"

"Who cares?" I said with a grin. The object us to have fun, and if a rule gets in the way remove the obstacle." that brought cheers from most of the audience, but I expect the rules lawyers thought me a heritic...

Cheers,
Gary

Pardon...

The reference was was to OAD&D, the first edition being the original.

Just FYI, OD&D is the original boxed set of three booklets and various supplements. What you refer to above as OD&D is revised D&D, a second edition;)

Cheers,
Gary
