I have reprintaphobia...

First Post
I went down to my FLGS(we are on better terms now that they are stocking stuff) and saw Path of the Sword..sweet, sold already have Magic plus Faith and Shadow on the way. I turned around and saw Quint Cleric from Mogoose..SWEET something else I had wanted and picked it up. My GF and I walked around the store for a while and then it crept up on me..a thread in the D20 publishers saying something like "Reprint of Quint. Fighter, new stuff" Then it hit me, what if Mongoose reprints the Quint. Cleric..then I will have to worry about a PDF of Web Enhancements and Errata that COULD already be in my book if I wait.

Anyone feel this way about buying new books?

I guess I should say I have no problems buying new books, errata happens. However, realizing that a reprint could be looming ahead soon with errata and new stuff is what bothers me.

Yes. I had decided I was not going to buy anything but 2nd printings, but after several years I've realized how difficult that is.
Most print runs for the smaller D20 companies are 5000 copies or less and usually take a year or more to sell out, from what I've heard. I'm sure Wizards prints many more copies.

The result of deciding to buy only 2nd printings was that my collecting stopped altogether. I thought 1st printings in RPG product was becoming like a lot of software...the first wave of buyers test the product and send in their feedback. 2nd printings for RPG supplements struck me as similar to patches to software, only a much slower process.

I used to think errors were inexcusable. Now I take a more philosophical stance and say that errors are unavoidable given the production schedules, staffing, and communication snafus common to the industry. My advice is to ignore these errors and fill in the blanks yourself. If an "official" errata appears, great, compare their results against your own. Who knows, you may like what you've changed better than the "official" corrections.

If a 2nd printing comes out and the changes were substantial I may pick it up, but only because I have the heart of the collector. There is no right or wrong way to approach it, but avoiding the 1st printings will be tough for the collector type.

One thing I'll give Games Workshop credit for is they have recently started providing their errata in such a way that you can just cut it out and glue it over the paragraph that is incorrect. Saves having to carry around a few sheets of errata that just get lost.

I bought a bunch of stuff that ended up being reprinted in Ultimate Feats and Ultimate Prestige Classes, which at once ticked me off and yet made me happy to have them consolidated under one cover. I was going to ditch my Quintessential books (since all the feats and PrCs were reprinted and I expect all the equipment will be in Ultimate Equipment), but then I noticed that they had other, exclusive information in them that I liked, so now I guess I won't sell them off... Damn, I could have used the cash to buy some other gaming stuff.

Can't speak for other publishers but, for a variety of reasons, the revised Quintessential Fighter was a one off - we won't be doing it again.

Damn you, I guess I will be going down tomorrow to get it...

ERr, I meant thanks, I really wanted it.

FWIW, I've noticed some PDF companies who will first release a product in PDF, then **possibly** release it in print. I think that's a good thing -- PDF buyers pay a lower price and have the product today, print buyers receive a "better" edition tomorrow.

If you can't support your local LGS, support your internet PDF! (:

Isn't it a bit like never buying a computer because only six months down the line you can get them better and cheaper?

Live your life today, I say! :)

(I'm a White Wolf fan, so I got used to picking up new editions during the nineties. ;))
