So, I we with one of my two best friends and four of my other friends (plus some of the folks they know, although those people sat elsewhere) went and saw Lamb of God, Slayer, Children of Bodom, Thine Eyes Bleed and Mastadon tonight at 'the Phone Booth' (the MTS centre) here in Winnipeg and I gotta say: *WOW*!!
Order of bands were: Thine Eyes Bleed, Mastadon, Children of Bodom, Lamb of God and Slayer. Here are my thoughts:
Thine Eyes Bleed - never heard of them before. The bassist is the brother of Slayers singer/bassist, which I found out after and is pretty cool. But aside from throwing around big names, I gotta say that these guys are awesome and have a lot of potential for a newer band - they truely surprized me. Awesome set with a 4.5/5 performance.
Mastadon - the 'lightest' band on the Unholy Alliance Tour, Mastadon is another band I have basically heard nothing about, and after their interesting brand of metal I heard, I doubt I will want to hear about them again. I dunno, I just couldn't get into them, with their constant tempo changes and just general oddness. Their last song was really good, actually - but the rest just was not for me. a solid 3/5, but nothing special.
Children of Bodom - I am a newer fan of this band, having bought their album Follow the Reapers about 3 months ago, and I was anticipating this bands performance. However, they played literally nothing I knew (which, while not a bad thing, it didn;t help me get into them), and it just wasn't that great of a performance; in particular I found the vocalist lacking something, like he wasn;t into it or something. 6 Pounder, a song I've never heard before was an awesome one, as well as one with 'Angels' in it's name (didn't catch the rest) was also really good, but the rest seemed sub-par. A 3.5/5 performance and an honest dissapointment....
Lamb of God - in all honesty, THIS was the band I've been waiting to see, and the band that got me into the metal sub-genre of Thrash Metal (whihc Slayer, the headliner, helped found). And boy oh boy I was NOT dissapointed! LoG was, straight up, the best band in the show; starting things off with 'Ruin' and diving straight into a slew of other songs. They saluted the drinkers of the evening with '11th Hour', dedicated another song to Winnipeg in general and even gave us a sample of their next ablum with 'Redneck', another staple LoG-style song. By the gods, it was simply AWESOME!!! An easy 5/5.
Slayer - I will share with you a dirty little secret: I have only heard one Slayer song before this night (Angel of Death, to be specific) and I wasn't impressed. Now, before all you metal buffs jump all over me, I will say after that show I am officially a Slayer fan
They put on a great show, with a video screen morphing into different imagery through their set, a lot of it album art, from what I heard from others. It was an interesting and original concept which was, at times more distracting than not, but still really cool. Another thing was that I could definitly hear where Lamb of God got their influences from in many of the songs, which was cool. For a band that's been around for 23ish years, that's pretty trippy for a person like me who's only 18. In any case, an wicked 4.75/5 show (I couldn't give it a 5 with LoGs wicked set; and frankly I'm just not that familiar with them).
In the end I am now a new Thine Eyes Bleed and Slayer fan and a mildly dissapointed Children of Bodom fan - and still a hardcore (and VERY hyped-up) Lamb of God fan. And also one who will liekly avoid Mastadon.
Anyone else see UAT, or going to or just want to drop in with thoughts / questions / comments?
