D&D 4E I may have had a 4e epiphany...

WotC undoubtedly has those ranges, but I doubt they'll be providing anything like that to their readers in as many words.

Otherwise, why buy MM books at all?
Well since some people don't wish to design all their monsters, or at least not all the time. It can be quite nice to simply go, okay... I need a monster group for 2000 XP, I pick this and this monster and 5 of these minions, cool good to go.

Also, Saitou, if those ranges exist, what better way to sell the MM to those who make all of their own monsters than putting that data in the MM itself?

Get those rules, and by inspection all of the various 'categorized exceptions' in there as well.

That's also a problem since it encourages WotC to power-creep so as to keep upping the ante.

Power-creep is bad, mmmkay.

You know, this makes me wonder how much monster creation advice there will be in the DMG/MM. We'll certainly have plenty of examples to go off of, but will the books actually lay down some guidelines for some of these numbers? Something along the lines of, "An X level brute should have about this many hit points, an AC somewhere in this range, an attack bonus somewhere in this range," etc.

I'm pretty sure that WotC has said explicitly that you will have this information.

I don't see why we wouldn't. It would be like withholding the various "monster class levels" from the original MM. (Which, uhm, they did for space, but published a web supplement with the data soon after.)

I'm pretty sure we'll see those guidelines in the DMG.

... wow, I never thought I'd say this, but the post someone said that the worst enemy of 4E was its own fans just came true to me.

Lizard publicly states he's changing his view on at least one major obstacle to 4E he has, and he gets statements claiming he's stupid?

The fact that Lizard did not raise to the bait thrown at him further enhances his standing, and lowers yours.

Please don't open this unless you promise to not be offended.

Boosting a monster’s level is easy. Just increase its attack rolls, defenses, and AC by 1 for every level you add. For every two levels, increase the damage it deals with its attacks by 1. The monster also gains extra hit points at each level, based on its role (see the “Monster Statistics by Role” table on page 184 of the Dungeon Master's Guide).
