I must be the only crazy person here....

Gnomes have illusionist as their preferred class because it's a sacred cow from 1st edition. They're also my favorite race to play, especially as druids, which I believe fits them better.

I could never understand why people play dwarves. They're like gnomes only boring.

PC fey race.

Well, yeah, but what I meant was that I haven't been able to figure out how they fit in my campaign world. I've always used them as sort of the easier-to-get-along-with cousins of the dwarves. But that makes them seem too dwarf-like to me, and doesn't give them enough flavor of their own. I'd rather they filled a niche that didn't require another race for comparison - like "happier dwarves" or "like a cross between dwarves and elves" or somesuch. It's just something I haven't been able to figure out for myself.

Ah, I see. I take it you don't have much of a fey presence in your world then? I think that they, like halflings, are more of a niche player than the old standby humans, elves, and dwarves. In many settings they just don't fit. I would agree. If one wants to run a game with strong fey elements, however, they become very useful. I think that strong fey elements are not very common in most D&D games though. It's not usually very strong in modern fantasy literature either. I think it would be fun to run a game like "Legend" with a truly romantic, larger-than-life, mythic/symbolic feel though.

Okay I have to admit this.

I like the Sword and Fist splat book, even with all its flaws. It is the most used splat book for my group, followed closely by Defenders of the Faith.
I like S&F, too - it's just that it could have been so much better...

I really liked Monster Manuel 2. I still don't see what the big stink is over it.
Not available around here yet, so I can't comment on it - much, that is. But from what I've heard about it, I think I will get it and like it.

Dragon Magazine 300 - Haven't seen it, but I will buy it and look through it. And probably not a single article written in it will be put into my campaign like the rest of the dragon mags since 3ed came out.
Right.

Gnomes, god how hate gnomes. The most worthless character race ever put into the game. If you wanna play a practicle joker, play a halfling. Wanna build things, play a dwarf.
I don't like them too much, either. :)

Join TGAS--Thinks Gnomes Are Stupid!!

Members get LOTS of GREAT benefits, like
-knowing that they are not alone in their gnome-bashing,
-a free whak-a-gnome machine (provided you build it yourself),
-and an official TGAS membership card! (sorry, but you'l have to make that yourself, too.)

Remember, kids: Just say gno to gnomes!

I have gnomes in my campaign setting, but not halflings.

HAW HAW HAW!

Well, at least, on the continent the PCs all live on. There -are- halflings, but they're rarely let out of the elven king's kitchens.

The splatbooks are all right; take what I want, leave what I don't. MMII is pretty decent; Dragon 300 was okay.

Most importantly...Gnomes. Never have given them much thought. I use the occasional archtypical old gnomish merchant or absentminded scholar as an NPC, but the race is very rarely selected for PCs in my group. Until recently, I hadn't seen one in years... but she's downright hilarious: name's "Twinkle"... with 2 levels of Rogue in my FREEPORT campaign, she decided to add a couple levels of barbarian... and the rest is history.

:D"Twinkle" the Barbarian... I'll never get over that one. With lucky rolls, she's even turned out to be a badass.

Gnomes

IMC Gnomes have favored class: Transmuters. They get a +2 Con, +2 Int, -2 Wis, -2 Str. They're magical researchers.

However, IMC Elves have favored class: Enchanter, so they don't totally outclass Gnomes in terms of magic.

IMC Dwarves do the tinkering & building.

PS: I have no splatbooks, but I will be buying MM2.

Long live gnomes! Children of the earth!

I can't believe all of the raging anti-gnomites on this thread.

"If you prick us do we not bleed? If you tickle us do we not laugh? If you poison us do we not die? And if you wrong us shall we not revenge?"

And to all you gnome haters who play Warcraft III, where would you be without gnomes, who would build your airships? Your tree harvesters? Who would fearlessly go on your suicide bombing missions? Nobody thats who! Because gnomes are the only ones with the grit and guts to get things done.

Tysr, I will be seeing you at gnomestock '02
