I need a "slimy" encounter

Here's the scoop:

I'm building an adventure - a "find all the McGuffins" one. The McGuffins I'm using are the Seven Veils from the Magic Item Compendium. Each one gets its own location that matches its theme somewhat and I have a rough idea for all of them except one: The Orange one.

The Orange Veil is an acid themed item. I would like it to be in the possession of someone (or something..) that knows how to use it. So I am looking to brainstorm for various "acidic" scenarios; that focuses on combat but some non-combat options are also good if possible. I was thinking slimes and oozes for the enemy of choice but I am open to just about anything.

So.. what kind of ideas do you suggest.

Thanks for the help,

Oozes are great.

There's a nice half-fiend black pudding in BoVD called "Darkness Given Hunger"; a unique creation of Juiblex. Could be a good BBEG, or just roll your own similar rule-breaking BBEG critter.

Other acidic critters:
- Ankheg (they spit)
- Babau (protective slime)
- Digesters (the forgettable D critter)
- Delvers (the other forgettable D critter)
- Black Dragons
- Half-Dragon (black) Trolls
- Half-Dragon (black) Half-Fiend Shadow-Creature Pseudonatural Pyrohydrae of Legend

Cheers, -- N

On the Wizards' site, there's a Half-Farspawn/Half Gelatinous Cube. It makes me drool.

Dungeonscape has the templates Sentry Ooze (gives ooze intelligence score) and Acidborne monster (monster immune to acid). Dungeonscape also offers options such as walls, floors, etc comprised completely of ooze.

A different route you might want to take is The Aboleth. Intelligent, great masterminds, capable of using magical items. They're not involved with Acid, but they are aquatic, exudes a slime that anyone hit by a tentacle turns into a skum, and the mucus membrane that surrounds them when under water causes creatures to breathe water/can't breathe air.

A few thoughts: don't forget fungi, molds, diseases, etc. Those should be rampant. Otyughs and other "gross wallowers in muck" are appropriate. Mm, chuuls.

Finally, here's an encounter I ran for my PCs. I had them roll fort saves. Then a minute later, more fort saves. The two PCs who failed began to vomit. Continually. The black-orange vomit came out until there was gallons of it. Then the vomit attacked. I treated it as two ochre jellies. It was a hard fight, and left the PCs unnerved whenever I ask for a fort save for the next two sessions. :D

The caustic veil is in a grotesque parody of that most grotesque plane, the Abyss. The territory is contested by the fungal minions of Zuggtmoy and the mindless oozes of Juiblex, a miniature rendition of the two demon lords' own struggle, enacted by two twisted worshippers (maybe both with the Thrall class of their respective demon prince) each seeking the favor of their Abyssal patron.

Demiurge out.

A living spell with an acid theme - (Living Acid Arrow, Living Acid Fog or something like that)

Aside from monsters:

A pool of acid you have to cross.

Mixing your own acid from various ingredients to bypass a door/monster or to just solve a riddle. (Self made acid might be of use after the adventure, too)

Maybe the players need to find the correct mix of bases to neutralize the acid pool .Maybe the goal is not to cross it, but to dive into it and retrieve an item. If you're willing to go there, consider that the players use different avenues to cross the pool. The acid mixing thing is then your way out if they don't have access to the right spells.

A trap or environment that covers people with a slime that easily catches fire.

A dinner where you have to eat slimy food. Gross from the outside, but maybe actually very tasty (or do you prefer poisonous?).

I would suggest some sort of spellcaster with the Oozemaster PrC and Energy Substitution: Acid for his spells.

Even better if said caster was a former known NPC that your players actually liked. :)
