So, you're deciding that it should be an exception to the way that the entire rest of the game works for what reason?

making something a straight ability check is not an exception to the way the entire rest of the game works. Its making it work the same as other ability checks. (Which are called for at different times in the game.)

Frankly I think its hard to come up with any sort of mechanic to represent romance (as opposed to calculated or predatory seduction). There is too much of an issue of compatability and individual attraction. If you are trying to pretend to be compatible with someone to get a date with them, thats bluff. If you are trying to follow social rules propperly so that you can talk to someone long enough to see if you're compatible, that's diplomacy. If you're trying to feel out (not up) a coworker to see if you should suggest a social get together, thats sense motive. If you want to determine whether you connect with the person after all that, I'd call that luck. Roll d20 with a modifier for compatible allignments, classes, races and age and call anything over 15 a potential relationship, true love on a natural 20 and no chance on a 1.
