Is it just me or is the honest answer for most people for the trolley problem be "panic, freeze and not be able to do anything fast enough to make a difference."

2. Snap the lever, and put it on the tracks in front of the train.
3. Throw yourself on the tracks to try and stop the train.

Depending on the country, doing nothing could actually make you legally liable.

Only if there was a reasonable option that would have not put myself into risk. Pulling the switch is not even an option according to German law and if there's no other obvious option that would not have put me in harms way and that I should have seen but chose to ignore I am legally fine.
