D&D 5E I sing the praises of the Champion!

Champion is fine, but to me it needs some tweaks and more ribbons to make it stand out and "pop" more. It better with feats and odd scores, so you can mix in Athletics, Durable, an armor feat, etc. feats that normally don't get used much.

Champion is one of my favourite classes. I like the "baked in" perks. It's the class I recommend for all new players: character won't die immediately, can participate in almost everything, no confusing options. I love it. As someone else mentioned, I would like to see similar options for the other classes.

The Champion is perfect for the drop-in player and as the sidekick NPC.

First sidekick NPC I used was a Champion fighter I converted from an old BECMI adventure. The PCs were level 3. He was level 5 and one of the PCs ran him (There were enough NPCs for this series of battles for each PC to run one). Simple to play. Powerful at level five compared to the PCs and it highlighted to them that this guy was the one in charge. The simple mechanics made the combat faster but it also allowed more mental energy to be expended for some role-playing during combat.

All Hail simple mechanics!
