I think I'm going crazy . . .

You arent going crazy, Wal-Mart is a strange store. I once found a ***** load of shell casings when I was 5 or 6 in a Wal-Mart, each were .22 and were of the three options: broken open/shot/new and unused. The store didnt even know they were there. Like I said, "Strange store".

You guys do know that der_kluge is the guy who wrote the software that makes sure that you get the new Wal-Mart flyer in the mail every week, right? Not only did he work for Wal-Mart, but he contributed to the junk mail problem, too. I say we harass him about this. :]

Heh, thanks for the idea.

I really hate Wal-Mart. It's partially their busines practices, partially the way they treat the people who make their products, partially the way they treat their employees, partially the way they lose millions of dollars every year putting smaller businesses out of business, and partially how they try to beat us over the head with their morality by cesoring music.

Wal-Mart is evil. Greedy, self serving, uncaring evil.

So as some of you may know I rarely go out. Today, I went to Wal-Mart (shudder) and the grocery store. By the time we were in the grocery store I felt like I was about to lose control and start screaming. Every ten feet I encountered a moron, the worst of which were the employees.

For example, Wal-Mart has signs posted at the registers proclaiming that all registers are open 10 am to 10 pm Saturdays. As I stood, waiting, an employee finally walked up and asked if I was waiting for something. I told her about the sign and she looked pissed.

Why are there always so many idiots out there? Why can't they just stay home (like I usually do)?

Anyway, back to work.

Ok, I can't comment about wal-mart (never been to one) but seriously dude, get over yourself, just as "every ten feet [you] encountered a moron", I'm willing to bet that every ten feet you are that same moron to someone else.

You say you don't go out much, are you GED (Generalized Anxiety Disorder)? Agoraphobic? If so, get therapy, personally I'd suggest CBT (Cognative Behavioural Therapy), believe me, as someone who suffered GED to the point of Agoraphobia, it can help.

If you don't think you suffer either, turn off the computer, go outside and deal with the rest of the world.

Well, I can't take all the responsibility for Wal-Mart's problems, maybe just a few. :)

I worked for Wal-Mart in college, and then at the home office, for a little over 5 years total.

Sam Walton had a great vision that included the use of a lot of technology to run his store. Did you know that Wal-Mart can predict almost exactly how many of an item a given store will sale based on last years sales, even account for variances like a 5 degree increase in the temperature? A vendor can dial into a system and see real-time how many of its products Wal-Mart is selling. It's a technology masterpiece, but also a social disaster.

I try to avoid Wal-Mart at all costs, personally. The stores near Bentonville, AR are immaculate, and gorgeous. Everything is fully stocked 100% of the time. The people are friendly, the aisles are wide, and everything is clean, all the time. But they have to be. Senior management shops there. :)

But when a Wal-Mart store sucks, it is absolutely, positively the direct result of the store manager. You see, at Wal-Mart, their bonus is based on store profit. So, the more sales they have, the more profit they make. To make more profit you either sell more stuff, or you cut costs. Guess which most managers choose? That's right, costs. It's the culture of the company to cut costs. Wal-Mart associates are fanatical about cutting costs. To the point of obsession, really. One easy way to cut costs is to reduce the number of employees. It wasn't uncommon on a Sunday morning when I worked at a store in college to be only one of two people covering all of hard lines. This is everything that's not clothes.

It's also Wal-Mart policy to not have more than 3 people in line waiting at a register. If you see more than 3 people, the manager clearly doesn't give a crap, and is ignoring Wal-Mart policy. I see this violation all the time, because the manager simply doesn't have enough people working to support the customers. But it's all about that precious bottom line for them.

Actually, there's nothing wrong with me* -- I used to be out in public a lot -- it's just that today was especially bad.

* Okay, I opened myself up with that one.

The one I was at had more than 3 people in various lines -- and half of the registers without cashiers. I probably wouldn't have been so bothered if there wasn't a sign at every register that read:

All Registers Open 10 am-10 pm Saturday and Sunday.

And then the employees are upset because you can read the sign and say something about it? WTF?

I don't have a problem with Wal-Mart. Mostly becasue there aren't any in my area.

You mean there's civilization in Montana? :p

Most of the Walmarts I've been into have nice wide aisles. Granted they all look like a tornado (kids) have been through it (especially the toy section) and are trashed all the time. Makes ya wonder about the average person who shops there (not including civilized folks like us... ;) ) and how they live at home! :] There's one I've been in that was the tight, cramped older model store.
