I was "booed" for even showing the 4e Core books

The GM of our group was really apprehensive about ending our 3E campaign and starting a 4E campaign. In fact it downright scared him.

He bought the core rulebook slipset and carefully studied each manual in minute detail. Then he talked it over with us and asked if we would mind playing a one-shot with pregens. The rest of the group saw no harm in it.

After the one-shot everyone minus two players had decidedly to embrace the new edition. Sure it was a major change; some good and some bad t, but the good outweighed the bad. We lost two players that had decided to not switch to the new edition. We've been playing 4E since July bi-monthly and we are really liking it. The other two players that bailed on us still keep in touch and they haven't played any DnD since they disbanded from the group.

I think one of them is going to crack and come back due to not his DnD fix. I guess playing 4E is better than not playing any other edition of the game.

Yes, I encounter it everyday. And god-willing I will continue to encounter everyday until I die, or 5e comes out and I can turn my nose up at that, whichever comes first.

And this weekend when I am playing my 4e wizard, Jerome Pennyweight, ineffectually buffeting wave after wave of shifty kobolds with Scorching Burst I will thrust my hands upward to the sky and scream, "Why, Mearls, why have you put forth this abomination unto man? And why am I a 1st level character fighting a black dragon?"

But in all seriousness, yes, I have encountered such an attitude toward 4e.

I've even seen a similar attitude of gamers to different systems.

Just mention WoD anywhere near D&D gamers and watch them sneer at "angsty larpers". Ask GURPs or Rifts guys about D&D and they'll roll their eyes about "level based systems", and so on.

It's certainly not exclusive to 4e, or 3e.

Yeah, somone needs to create a Hierarchy of RPG's. Who wants to volunteer?

Game stores who base their merchandise on their own personal opinions rather than the customer demand are doomed to fail... And hey, look at what happened to poor Retreater's two game stores!

Many of the WOD LARPers that I know also play DND.

I am 99% positive that my former gamer-buddies would be more willing to play World of Synnibar or FATAL than 4E.

I feel compelled to point out that that I own a copy of Synnibar but not 4E.

We had one player drop out of our group when my 3.5 game ended and we announced we were moving to 4E. There was some tension in the group by the end of the game though so he might have left anyway.

He's refused to play in any 4E games, saying that he read it, was instantly able to pick out the most powerful combinations (which was boring to him) and said that fights with higher level monsters would take too long since their HP are so much greater than PC's damage capability. I guess we'll see when we get there...

But aside from the will to destroy beautiful things, I think you have also shown to be quite masochistic, so it doesn't surprise me!

I wasn't there, but members of my group told about how they ridiculed WotC (and probably to some extend 3E) for their Magic Games. We still don't like Trading Card Games (well, I can't say whether I like or dislike, they didn't interest me so far), but we definitely jumped onto the 3E and now 4E bandwagon despite all doubts.

I've only seen it on messageboards. No one in the groups I play in booed 4E. We tried it, decided its "OK", and we will keep on playing C&C, Warhammer, Alternity, Synnibar, GURPS, Etc... instead.

OF course our playtest of 4E isn't over yet. The DM for it estimates 3 or so sessions to go. So someone may still fall in love with 4E, but not looking likely.

Still, no booing.
