I wish they'd just reboot.

Okay, I've read the article about the new pantheon. I'm okay with the decision but seriously, I wish they'd just REBOOT the damn settings. It was all a dream. JR is alive.
Start it all over again with the new pantheons. The Time of Troubles hasn't happened yet.
Temple of Elemental Evil? Is yet to be discovered. And in Dragonlance, the gods are all missing.

Rather than coming up with some really stupid reason for why Bane is hanging out in Greyhawk and Pelor has suddenly poked his head into FR... That's just not going to work well, and it's going to annoy all the grognards. Just reboot the timelines and do a remake. People like remakes. They're in vogue. Make new assumptions. Hell, it'd give Wizards a *reason* to come out with "Return to the Expedition to the White Plume Mountain." And really, who doesn't want to revisit all the classic dungeons anyways? It's the Barrier Peaks, but this time the aliens are less goofy and more gritty...

It gives the classic fans something to look forward to... "I wonder how they'll do the Pools of Radiance" story? And it means the new people don't have to depend on 30 years of knowledge to play.

It would also totally burn a hole in thousands of ongoing campaigns that have been running for decades.

No thanks. There's no reason you can't reboot your campaign world, but I certainly don't want anyone rebooting mine!

The new assumed setting is neither Greyhawk nor Forgotten Realms, so there's nothing about Bane showing up on Oerth or Pelor in Forgotten Realms.

Huh? Are you talking about rebooting the different settings, or something else? I am confused.

Since when was there any talk about Pelor showing up in the Realms, or Bane is showing up in Greyhawk? Certainly both seem to be showing up in the PHB sample pantheon, but if anything, that is a totally new setting that doesn't have a name.

Are you talking about "rebooting D&D", and rewriting all the adentures ever written? That doesn't make any sense at all. D&D isn't a universe, and it isn't something with a history that can be rebooted. It is a game system. It gets revised, not rebooted.

Anyways, I don't want to see them just rewrite adventures for the sake of rewriting old ones. I want to see totally new adventures that highlight the strengths of what is unique and intersting about 4E.

And suddenly shifting the entire pantheon is not going to have an effect your ongoing campaign? Or going through some sort of spellplague transition period? You can keep running a campaign without official support just as you could reboot without official support. Just as you could keep running your current campaign without going through a spellplague.

I'm simply suggesting that reboot may be a better way to go (once you finish the current campaign of course). Everyone does suggest that you do not convert characters mid-campaign anyways.

Did they say they were going to use the new iconic deities as an actual pantheon? If so, where did they say that?

Assuming, as seems highly probable, that they are using the Greyhawk pantheon for Greyhawk and the Forgotten Realms pantheon for Forgotten Realms, why is this 'reboot' even needed?

I'm talking about saying, "Remember everything we ever published? Yeah. We're going to remake it. All of it. The Timelines in all of the settings are reset to 'zero'. Don't get too comfortable, things may happen a little bit differently this time around."

(Okay, maybe doesn't make sense for Ebberon, but could be really cool for everything else.)

They're creating a single pantheon for their new setting which is a mix of deities. And they're going through a god massacre in FR. Related? Perhaps. Don't know. It's perhaps improbable that they would try to standardize all of the gods. But they still need to go through a "Time of Troubles" like period again to explain the 4e changes. I think they shouldn't bother.

I don't forsee Bane in Greyhawk, Pelor in FR, or even Aureon in Planescape, for that matter. That said, the nostalgia in me likes the idea of a "reboot," but those who have already played it once probably aren't going to be happy with a rehash of the original material, so it's probably not a sale-worthy idea. You have given me an inspiration for June of 2008, though. I can envision a bunch of 4E characters jumping into the Ruined Moathouse outside Hommelet, because none of my current group of players I don't think has ever played it... :D

I don't know if it's for that, or if it's to jumpstart flagging FR sales from the past few years; it could be either one, because I haven't heard any sales figures.

So, you want to invalidate all of the previously published material?

People are throwing a coniption fit that the Great Wheel is gone and the Succubus is a Devil. Can you imagine the fury that just kicking the blocks of all campaign settings over would cause?

Bane is not in Greyhawk, Pelor is not in FR. 3e had Greyhawk gods in the PHB, and the Greyhawk gods did not show up in FR.

3e had the "default setting" of all the published core/supplement books set in Greyhawk. 4e has all the "default setting" in the core/supplements set in their "Points of Light without a name" setting.
