I wonder about Gleemax...

The likes of ENWorld and RPG.net already have big communities associated with them, so that would be tough from an inertia standpoint, but Just how much could they leverage 4th edition D&D toward such a goal?

Idle thoughts. Hmmmm.

Honestly though, I think ENWorld is already dying (in terms of active membership). 4e is sapping away at it - some people who like 4e are now favoring the official Gleemax boards - those that hate 4e are going elsewhere too or just not bothering visiting message boards anymore (since 3e/d20 is basically dead, with no more product support, really). Things have been really slow around here the last several months.

And RPG.net probably has more banned members ( ) than actual members. (and I must say, I don't miss it much either. Very trying place, too much arguing)

That said, I think Gleemax is so poorly implemented (especially technically) that it won't be too much of a factor.

Perhaps it's due to the diligence of the mods (bow, scrape, tug forelock...) but the community that is EN World seems a lot more mature than Gleemax.

I *want* Gleemax to work. Right now, it doesn't.

Agree. Their current site is way too cluttered, heavy and slow and I have a hunch they'll botch their virtual tabletop as well.

It's a typical example of corporate-driven product design, imho: Instead of putting user interest first, they obsess about brand & ip, forced retention and eye-candy.

I visit there less than ever before. part of it is that my life is busier and more full than ever before (good job + good woman + actual game night = little free time). The only reason I ever go back anymore is because it is the only place I know with a dedicated d20 modern forum. And d20 modern is my favorite game. That said there has not been a single release or web update for it in more than a year. Two years if you count anything with actual content.

I loaded up Gleemax several times a week when it first came out. Now I barely look at it. Maybe once every two months? Really, it was just too slow and clunky when I first loaded it up, and the fact that it didn't improve at all over the weeks that I stuck with it made me lose interest fast.

I'm hoping for good things, but not right now. Maybe in a few months I'll check in on it again to see if they've issued another patch.

I've been to Gleemax a grand total of 3 times (I still think the name sounds like a clumsy euphemism for masturbation and it just doesn't... feel right. I think I'll go there right now and check it out. I haven't been visiting any gaming boards lately (aside from CthulhuTech), and I guess it's time I started again. My DM has decided to stop running D&D until 4E comes out (playing WHFRP and STAR WARS SAGA EDITION... but they won't let me run CthulhuTech :( ), which surprises me all to heck (I had to use all my persuasive powers to convince him to try out 3E)

All in all, I'm really looking forward for 4E, I guess, and reading about 3E stuff kinda just feels redundant. I'm staying around for the sake of all the people around here at ENWorld. I'd miss everyone if I just left.

And so... of I go now, into the den of Gleemax, to see how it's changed... if at all. I promise to post more frequently... if anyone cares, that is.

I havent looked at Gleemax since shortly after gen con when I was royally peeved with Wizards and since became extremely attached to this place and dndonlinegaming.com I may go back today to look at some things but overall I am much happier with here.

My username and password no longer work there. Haven't bothered to try to get it fixed (or reregister). Not enough good to outweigh the bad.

I'm pretty sure I had 4,000+ posts there too (not counting meta board and Rec Room posts).

I used to hang out at the CharOp forums pretty much daily, and also run through the general D&D, Realms and Eberron areas (Eberron more than the others, because it was fun having Keith Baker on deck to answer questions).

These days, I go there about once a week, and it never remembers my password / login, and some days, neither do I, so I end up skipping it entirely rather than enter every password / login I can remember ever using. I know that I've updated my account (I have the emails to prove it), but it still refuses to accept my new email address and sends stuff to my old one. Grr.

This place and the Paizo forums have taken over my D&D posting needs.
