I wonder if he was trying to kill me.

It might make things a bit easier/more fun if you could run two Characters

Not a bad suggestion but he's a bit adverse to people (other than the GM) playing multiple characters due to a rather extreme situation I know he's been in where another lone player of his played 8 heroes at once in a single-player campaign. Two isn't eight I know, but it seems like he'd still be immediately against the idea.

I was playing as an antipaladin (yay evil campaign) who had just gained her power at the start of the game. I was smart enough to not go attacking local authorities at random, but I wanted to at least kill someone so I set out towards the slummy areas of the city. I came across an injured woman and a child hiding out in what had looked like an abandoned house so I decided to kill them, figuring they wouldn't be missed.

Sorry, couldn't get past this part. This is why I've usually disallowed evil characters in my campaign. The first thing you did was go out to randomly murder someone. Even evil, heck even chaotic evil, characters should have some kind of motivation beyond finding random people to kill. But I can't say your reaction to playing evil differs to the majority of people I've seen try to pull it off.
 

The motivation, as I've said already, was one part having shiny new powers and wanting to test them out, and one part not being ready for bigger evil yet.
 

I'm not sure that he was trying to kill you. I'm pretty sure that he was trying to make you as ineffectual as possible.

Personally, I loved the bit about the paladin who starved himself to death just to lure you into a trap. "What do you mean you're not taking my bait?! How about now?! Aha got you! I'm so clever."
