I won't be switching to D&D 3.5e

come to the dark side...

"I know a lot of people are going to stick with 3.0,"

Go back a few years to the introduction of 3.0 and read the postings there. They said the same thing. [For that matter, they said the same thing when 2e came out, when AD&D came out, when...]

No doubt there will be a few who stick with 3.0, but the great majority will switch to the new system, and be glad they did.

You're just a little too good at that, Alzrius... are you, by any chance, a sentient, role-playing, internet-surfing, message-board-posting kitten?

If you are, can I have your autograph?

If you're not, could you come over and guest play one in a d20 Modern game? :D

edit: arggh, almost forgot to comment on topic!

i will absolutely reserve judgement on the issue of buying the new books. the sad but simple truth is that buying all three of them would represent more than 75% of my monthly luxury budget - and that's a hefty percentage for a product that only clarifies a product i already own!!!!

Ah the new rule books....
I want to switch. I really do. I could probably get the money for the books without much of a problem. That's what plastic is for.

The problem is the rest of my group. They played 2nd ed for years. They only converted to 3e a year and a half ago. Many of them are still fumbling with the rules (they don't compulsively read the books in their off-time, like me).

Eveybody in my group is just now managing to truly start understanding the nuances of 3e.

I tell you now, another change will not go down well.

Maybe in another year or so.

I'll go with the SRD first, but I might get the books if they look good. As has been said before, the MM looks pretty tempting (and I would argue that it will have the most changes of all the books).

You bring up an excellent point.

My group is pretty much like yours. While I may be willing to buy all three of the core books again, most of the players in my group are not. I guess they don't have as much a passion or an inquiring mind for roleplaying games as I do. Heck, most of the players in my group don't even peruse the EN World website like I do, even though I've pointed it out to them several times. (It was a surprise to them all when I mentioned that 3.5 is coming out, and in return, I got a bunch of groans and shaking heads. And more than one of my players thought I was kidding them.)

Yep, the DMs I know personally reacted like "Uh, man, I don't know..." while the players have been kinda split between "Hmm, whatever" and angry grimmaces of pain. :)

More power to you.

Keep in mind that you can download all the meat of 3.5 for free the same day it's released.

As far as I'm concerned, 3.5 is the real third edition. Everything up until now has just been playtesting.

the appeal of the 3.5 MM

There is a big incentive to get the 3.5 Monster Manual, over the other core books, I think. Supposedly, everything 3.5 is going to be published to the SRD the day it's released (given their history of late updates to the SRD I'll believe that when I see it, but that's another thread...). That means we can get all the rules changes, new classes and crunchy bits for free.

But the big thing that appeals to people about the new MM is the changes to the layout and the flavor text. None of these things will make it into the SRD. We'll get updated stat blocks, and a minimal descriptive blurb, like we have now. The biggest benefit of the revised MM, the better layout, will be lost.

I won't be buying the revised books RIGHT AWAY, but eventually, I probably will. I'll glean what I can from the SRD, and live without the pretty pictures.
