I won't be switching to D&D 3.5e

The rule changes I've seen for 3.5e strike me as really a.) unneccessary or b.)possibly detrimental to the game.

For example- the new ranger excited me at first, but now I don't see how it is any better than the old ranger. Now instead of being shoehorned into Two-Weapon Fighting, he's shoehorned into EITHER archery OR two-weapon fighting.

The new DR system seems counter intuitive to me. As Brown Jenkin said, it seems to create the idea of characters carrying around a golfbag of weapongs for different foes.

The idea of completely redoing the spells seems like the biggest obstacle to conversion. A lot of spells will now have completely different rules and some may be on different levels than in 3e.

Finally I'm really opposed to how Wizards is beginning to market D&D as a collectable miniatures wargame. I was initially very excited about 3.5e focusing more on the tactical miniatures aspect(because I always use miniatues or counters for my games) until I learned about the new D&D miniature line. Random Collectable miniatues for a ROLE-PLAYING game!!? Come on Wizards, this isn't Mage Knight!

Oh well, I guess 3.5e will keep a lot of players happy until 4e comes out in 2005;)

Actually, the more I see the more I'm impressed. Some of the spell changes will alter the way my game runs, but I think it will result in a better game overall. I'm seeing lots of small things improved, and they will add up to substantial improvement in how my game runs.

I get an impression of lessened spell power on long-term buffs (vis-a-vis Ed Stark's comments in this month's Dragon regarding Polymorph) and a hesitation to allow skill-boosting spells and magic items to overwhelm character abilities. I get an impression of more choices for PCs, too, and that's a good thing.

Of course, after you've had a chance to review all of the changes, you may still want to stick with 3.0 - no harm in that. 3.0 runs incredibly well. I view 3.5 as fine tuning, and that's okay with me.

In fact, I don't think you'd be 'forced out' of the market as far as new d20 products go. There simply isn't that big of a difference. A couple of spells work a little differently. DR is different. A couple feats and skills are renamed. From the POV of an adventure or sourcebook you can ignore these easily enough.

I won't guarantee that I'm taking every change into my games. But for the most part I like it. DR will not lead to 'golfbags full of weapons', it will lead to research. It will also discourage from the current practice of 'sell every item I find and put it all into one uber-weapon'. Don't forget they are lowering DR as well, so that if you don't have the appropriate weapon it isn't anything a little Power Attack won't take care of. I mean if you don't like it don't use it, but I think this is a molehill, not a mountain.
 

Well, I don't plan on buying the revised books. Blackshirt on the other hand.... he could buy a car with all the money he spends on gaming books, and I don't see that trend stopping any time soon....
 

Actually, I don't plan on swtiching to 3.5, I've already got my house rules and everything, so I'm not gonna switch.

And despite what Angcuru says, I'm not some junkie who needs to go out and get a fix. I just happen to really need Mongoose books. So badly that I'd kill for them.
 


I am moving my game to 3.5. I plan to download the SRD, sqaure it up nice in Word and then put it on CD for my players to print out.

I use a hero point system to award good gaming - and I usually offer 1 hero point per $5 spent on books for my game - I will make that offer for the PHB.

My rules for the changeover are all spells and skills will convert to 3.5 , and all new feats taken will be 3.5.

Players may choose to either keep their current characters at 3.0 (and thereafter using only 3.0 for class, skill, and pre-existing feats ) or convert completely over to 3.5. Its a one-time only offer.

Any new characters will be 3.5.
