IA: A Teacher for Laynie

"Well, there's plenty out there to find in these ruins I'm sure, some more powerful than others, and tis a task in and of itself. How to handle them correctly, how they're protected, and then figuring out what they do. Seems related to creation. Perhaps knowing what an older object did and how might give you insight into a new way of doing things."

"You see sir, I'm hoping to stick around here for a while for her," he says, pointing to Laynie. "Not too many kids her age think that the Kenp text is easy reading, and she's got something special going for her. And if I have to, I'll find ways to stick around for a few years till she is ready. Now, I was hoping, while I was here, maybe to learn a little bit myself. And I'm thinking to myself, how can I use what I know to help me here? And that's where I thought of artifact recovery. I realy could prove to be a boon to you sir, if you'd give me a chance."

"Go ahead sir, ask her a little bit about what she's reading and what she knows. I think she'd supprise you."

"Ah, I'm not interested in her yet. Too young yet, you know? Maybe when she's older. She's a pretty little one, and looks like a quick learner. Maybe she'll follow in your footsteps, Elektra? You and Lily I think were the only two students who aced Nexuses and Foci as first-years. Think little Laynie will be the third?"

"I can't say sir. Maybe."

"As for the ruins around here, official school policy is that all those magical artifacts belong to us. Over the years, pretty much everything of value has been looted or recovered already, except for perhaps a few things that are so carefully guarded with warding magic that they would be hard to find anyway, and we don't even know if there are any of those still."

"Now, of course, any discoveries we do find are indeed a boon, but we cannot expect it. I must say that you can't expect to take an entire course of study around it, and that's coming from someone who absolutely loves researching magical artifacts. But I grudgingly admit that the requirement of basic competence in at least six of the eight core subjects is a good way to build well-rounded mages for the future. That's not to say that lots of magical artifact research isn't a great idea--it would be a nice way to do a bit of undergraduate research and get a head start, right?"

'Well, that sir would be exactly what I'd be looking for. And whatever you'd need to help you out, be it look for things, or whatever, I could be there to help you with. And I'd be willing to bet that given a day or two I could go out and find something in the ruins out there."

"Ah, an ambitious one, aren't we Vanitri. If it was easy enough to find magic in those ruins, why the entire nation of Medibaria would be out there every day. I doubt anyone in the department would share your optimism enough to divert precious research funds up front to cover your internship, but I'm sure we could work something out on the fly once you get in. Needless t osay, applying to Omega is the way to go here, as we offer the most opportunities and the most funds to the best and the brightest of our own, though of course young luminaries from the other Houses like Miss Planter there are always welcome too."

"Well, with some good words from you sir, I'm sure I'll be right here studying with you in no time," Vanitri says respectfully.

"Well, first you'll have to pass the entrance exams, though. They're quite rigorous, you know? In any case, I must be off. Good luck on the exams, Vanitri. Don't be a stranger, Planter."

*And with that, he continues off down the hallway.*

"They are tricky and varied. We aren't allowed to speak of the exact format to those who have yet to apply, but the last part can be...harrowing."

"Anyway, I hope you got some useful information out of Professor Grywald for which you were looking. He's a little bit self-absorbed, and he likes to be thought of as young, especially by the female students. He's not that young, but he does age rather gracefully, and he has a nice smile."

"We can check out the Omega dormitories while we are over here. After that, I'm going to need to pop over to Daryne for a minute--I sort of told Garrick I'd do this tour without thinking about how long it would take, so I need to stop by and talk to Truman, but I can show you Daryne while I do, and then we can finish off afterwards. Okay?"
