--- BROKE-BACK BEND ---

As one, everyone turns and looks at the newe arrival. There is a moment of stillness on the sandbank. Lumin breaks it.

"Tarren? What are you doing here?"

Guarin looks at the newcomer, and is not very impressed. He moves a bit closer to Forissa, and peers at the bushes to see if anyone else is hiding there.

--- BROKE-BACK BEND ---

Guarin recognises the boy standing before them. The knight has see the lad around Bifyrd Manor a couple of times, once or twice with Myrel if memory serves him correctly.

Tarren takes an involuntary step backwards as everyone turns their attentions to him. The knight's dismissal of him stirs something inside him though and he steps back forward, drawing himself up straight and dignified. He does his best to look like a young man and not a wayward child. He looks Lumin in the eyes.

"I am here to look for Myrel. I want to help."

"Tarren!" Forissa starts reflexively, in her schoolmarm voice, reacting to the sight of the youth,"You can help best by getting back to the manor before Nurse Middling realizes a second of her charges has gone missing today! We'll bring Myrel back - don't worry. I know you two -- " Here, looking at the boy, she checks herself, not sure what Lumin thinks or knows of his daughter's friendship with the scruffy-looking boy, "...I know you must be worried for her, as are we all." She regards him, all straightened up, chest puffed out in earnest bravura, and regrets the tone she initially took. "What help could you give, Tarren?" she asks him, not derisively or mockingly, but directly, inviting him to explain his intentions.

"If he wants to join, let him. I was younger then him when I got my first scar, and my first kill. If he wants to be a warrior, 's his choice" Guarin grumbles.
"You got a weapon, boy?"

Tarren relaxes a little as he gets past the group's initial scrutiny. Now all he has to do is explain himself. Once you get them talking, all you have to do is think faster than they do.

He looks Forissa in the eyes as he addresses her concerns.

"I can do as much as any other man. An extra pair of hands, and an extra pair of eyes, sharp ones at that. There is a lot of forest out there to look through, I can do my fair share."

He turns to Guarin and inclines his head in honor of the knight's sentiment at least, if not his attitude.

"I have a knife, I do not intend to fight off any armies today, but it is enough if I need to defend myself. Still, my first concern is to find Myrel and get her to safety. I will do whatever is necessary for that goal."

He turns to face the group as a whole.

"I can help, if you will let me. All I ask is a trip across that river, but be assured that your refusal will only serve to delay me, not deter me. I will swim if I have to."

--- BROKE BACK BEND ---

"Don't test my patience boy!" snarls Lumin. "If I tell you that you will return to manor, then you will return to the manor. So stop playing the fool and get back to the house."

Mosa and Sarin look on, but keep their thoughts on the matter to themselves. And will probably do so unless Lumin asks for them.

Tarren spares a quick glance towards the knight and priest to see if either of them will provide him with any support. He can hardly stand up to Lumin alone. And he doesn't relish the idea of having to swim across the river.

Forissa says, almost dismissively "You heard your lord, Tarren. Off with you now."

She crosses behind Lumin toward the boat, keeping her gaze fixed on Tarren, and in the process stumbles over the armor that Guarin has shed onto the ground in preparation for the ferry ride. She looks at the knight, "are you going to need to take that off and put it on every time we get on or off the boat, cousin? Why didn't you bring a squire with you, then?"
