"He definitely said he wanted the head," Tolan replied, humorlessly. Drawing his sword, he lined up a strike to decapitate the creature. As he drew back the sword, he spotted movement. "Be on your guard, their are humanoids approaching. Get to your beasts and prepare to leave this place."

"Nice blow! Can you please bring the head back? " Thaliss told the sword-master, mostly for Savra not to question his authority on his "retainers".

After Tolan's warning, Thaliss looks at her "If you don't mind, I will be riding back with you my dear"

Four vaguely humanoid creatures step out from the fog. They are tall, thin, and feathered. Their feathers are mostly dark with various spots and stripes. They seem to be armed with spears and swords at the moment.

Savra responds immediately, "Aarakocra! Like vultures... they must have heard the fighting and come to pick the losers corpse clean."

The creatures look at the manticore, Tolan standing above, and at the rest of the party. They seem slow to decide on actions, and the caw and crow to each other discreetly.

[sblock=Maighan]You have heard that these creatures are part of a primitive hunter-gatherer society, though you did not know that there was a tribe in this particular valley. They range widely in traits depending on their tribal customs, and can be very aggressive and hostile or mild mannered and friendly.[/sblock]

Thaliss raises both of his hands as a pacific gestures. All present, including the Aarakocra, "hear" in their minds Greetings friends. We wish you no harm. We were hunting this dangerous and evil creature and only need its head as proof that we were successful. We give you its body as a sign of our good faith. Unless you are able to speak in my mind as I am doing right now, I won't be able to understand your language. Can you stomp your feet twice as proof that you are peaceful and will let us leave unmolested?

One of the creatures steps forward, spear somewhat ready to strike or defend itself. "Surprising. Different from before... you are a wizard? I am Aak. The beast you killed was indeed a threat. It had been in heat. Attracted a mate."

Savra draws her slender silver longsword. "These creatures are murderers and worse. The commander has been attempting to cut down on their numbers."

"Please, lower your weapon my dear. If these creatures were murderers, they would not have shown themselves first." Thaliss says authoritatively to Savra. Looking back at the feathered humanoid "Well met Aak. I am Thaliss of house Eviastarim. Indeed, I dabble in various magiks. We have no quarrel with you, or your friends. Tell me, are we in danger of this beast's mate? I am also curious, what do you mean by "different from before"?"

Telepathically to Tolan, Carradoc and Maighan, Thaliss adds Perhaps these creatures will have more insight about what is going on in the towers. Don't let Savra get to them. I have a hunch that they may be useful to us

After the decapitating blow, Tolan cleaned his blade on the beast's flank. Keeping his blade free, he grabbed the creature's head and gestured towards the body with his blade. "Feel free to do what you will with the rest of it."

Maighan glances quickly around, marking the movement in the shadows and mists. They had come prepared to fight if need be...that, combined with Savra's immediate reaction, spoke volumes.

She keeps her bow in hand but doesn't draw another arrow for the moment. Thaliss seemed to be doing fine, so she felt no need to step in.

Though she did resolve to keep an unobtrusive eye on Savra. If it looked like she was going to do something stupid, like attack, Maighan had magic to put an end to it.

Savra keeps her blade drawn and looks out into the fog. "This is dangerous. These are fiends. Descendants of demons. They could just be distracting us while others surround us."

Aak walks towards the beast and touches its broken wing. "Yes. The male may be angered that the female is dead. The pups may also be a threat, if they are old enough to survive. They nest across the river... in the far south of the valley."

He seems to make a wild manner of gestures, his head contorting in strange inhuman directions as he speaks.

[sblock=religion_DC_16]The bird man seems to be enacting some sort of blessing of the wind spirit Chan.[/sblock]

As his ritual finishes, his flock leaps forward towards the body and begins to draw small knives and hooks. They seem to hurry into work butchering the corpse... obviously quite experienced at the act and crude at the same time.

"Another wizard. A female. Elf. Aided by the crooked talon tribe. Came to the valley. Spoke through the minds. Wished for us to serve, but like the talons, she follows false gods. Deceivers."

He gestures towards Tolan. "We will make use of it. Hunting has been scarce of late. Poachers on our lands make things hard. You may wish to lose the scent of the matriarch. The male or its pups may try to follow it."
