Edit: Actually, strike this, the rolls are not required (can't roll to go back up to total with temp HP. I'm still assuming that Carradoc does his thing at every short rest.

Dent raised an eyebrow in surprise at the retreat of the hobgoblins. He'd missed seeing the corridor they'd run down. He wouldn't make the same mistake twice, and barreled forward to join Kubeba at the door. Snorting at Kubeba's suggestion they knock, Dent first tried the door knob. If it wouldn't open readily, he steeled himself to level it with a kick from a metal-shod boot.
