Vandor

Vandor looked over the drawings on the walls. It was possible they held clues to what they might yet encounter. Olrich pointed out that one of the drawings represented the malfunctioning robot they had dealt with earlier. The four armed creatures were unfamiliar. Perhaps some underground dwellng being?

Twist was excited as usual over finding shining things. Appearanlty some of them were a type of power source.

"Twist, please keep those silverdisks and other technological pieces safe. Those pieces may seem to be useless now but since we know so little about this stuff, it may be useful later." he suggested.

Looking at the tunnels, both of which seemed nearly identical, he saw no indication of which direction Baine may have traveled.

"Can anyone provide an educated guess on which tunnel to take?"

Hailey only glanced back a few times during the conversation, just to steal peaks at what everyone was fussing over. Disks and the robots did not really concern her much as she expected they would find all sorts of things down there.

She shrugged at Vandor’s query, “Both tunnels look the same, curving away before I can see too far. Let’s take the one to the right when you all are ready,” Hailey suggested as she gestured to the western tunnel.

Looking at the silverdisks closely, Twist is able to see that all are destroyed batteries.

[section]Twist nodded at Vandor. "They don't look like they have any juice left to 'em, but I'll hold them for us just the same. They're worth something, even if they're depleted." He didn't, however, put the seven silverdisks in his pack. "Uh, they're kinda heavy." Twist bobbled the batteries, weighing them. Then he held them to the group. "I'll carry 'em, but they're heavy enough that they're gonna slow me down a good bit." In typical Twist fashion, the ratling didn't come right out and ask someone else to carry the silverdisks, but his body language belied a hope that someone would offer. [/section]

Olrich holds out his hand expectantly to the ratling. At worst carrying them himself would give him a chance to examine them at his leisure. He was curious as well as to why his locally based companions did not seem to suggest repairing them with a simple cantrip or two.

"Here," said Zeta. "I'll take them."

She glanced at Olrich, then shrugged. "We'll split them then." She hands Olrich a few, and tucks the rest in her own pouch.

Hailey remained where she was, not able to really help carry more gear while retaining her mobility. Pushing the brim of her hat upward slightly she asked, “Since you have that settled, are you two about ready to resume moving into the next tunnel? The one on the right?”

Cold Cavern

At last the group is ready to move again. They return to their formation and Twist leads the group down the chosen tunnel. As twist moves forward he quickly notices, as does his companions, the rapid drop in temperature. After traveling a short distance Twist comes to a ledge. Zeta comes forward to look down and Hailey comes close to help shed light on the situation. There is actually a rime of white frost that lines the walls and floor leading into this cavern. There also seems to be a light layer of brown dust that carpets the cave floor beyond. Zeta spots a body of some sort that sits slumped against the eastern wall. The floor below the ledge is about 10 feet below. Anyone wishing to scramble down needs to make a DC 10 climb check.

OOC: If anyone wanted to do anything else just post and I will take care of that. Otherwise I thought it best to move things along.

"Do not go any further!" says Olrich abruptly as recognition dawns on him.

OOC: Knowledge (Nature): 1D20+7 = [18]+7 = 25

The correct knowledge check is Dungeoneering but the result is the same. Olrich recognizes the "brown dust" for its true nature. It is a large patch of brown mold. He knows the information given in the block below and may now present what he wants when he wants to.

[sblock=Brown Mold]Brown mold feeds on warmth, drawing heat from anything around it. It normally comes in patches 5 feet in diameter, and the temperature is always cold in a 30-foot radius around it. Living creatures within 5 feet of it take 3d6 points of nonlethal cold damage. Fire brought within 5 feet of brown mold causes the mold to instantly double in size. Cold damage, such as from a cone of cold, instantly destroys it.[/sblock]

"That brown dust is a form of mould, and it is what has made this passageway so frigid," explains the arcanist. "If you get too near you could literally freeze do death in moments. Now, I think I have a way of dealing with it..." Olrich's voice trails off as he reaches for the bag containing his book of spells. He flips through the pages for a few moments before settling on one and scanning it for a few seconds. Those watching carefully might catch a small glimpse of energy roiling in his eyes as he does so.

The arcanist closes his spellbook and holds it to his chest with his left hand while he steps up to the ledge. He makes a few gestures, says a few short words, and then points at a patch of mould as a thin ray of icy white energy bursts from his fingertip to strike at it.

OOC: Use my quick study exploit to swap out jolt in favour of ray of frost, and then cast it.

[section]Twist eyed the rime of frost with interest but stayed away from it. He and his kin knew cold was a killer; it crept on cat feet in the dead of winter and stole a ratling's breath. When Olrich took out his spellbook, Twist watched the intrigue unfolding before him. Magic was beyond his ken, and he admired anyone who could channel it. [/section]

Vandor peers down the passageway.

"Mold that freezes people in seconds? Very interesting. I wonder if it could be used for non-harmful purposes?"

Sure enough when Olrich casts the cantrip at the floor below a small patch of the brown dust turns grey. Olrich estimates that at the rate that he could cast the cantrip it would take at least half an hour in order to clear enough of the brown dust to make it safe to get down to the body. But then he realizes that it would actually take longer because as he kills off the dust it will become harder to target areas precisely. A better estimate would be closer to an hour. From above Zeta is fairly sure that the body has some nice equipment. At least a nice chain shirt and crossbow.

"Wait," Zeta says. "Maybe there's a way to spread that around more. Empty some water over it."

She demonstrates, splashing water from her waterskin.

"Once there's enough water, use your magic to freeze the water. It may take more than one, but it should mean you don't have to hit tiny patches, one at a time."
