"Do not go any further!" says Olrich abruptly as recognition dawns on him.

OOC: Knowledge (Nature): 1D20+7 = [18]+7 = 25

The correct knowledge check is Dungeoneering but the result is the same. Olrich recognizes the "brown dust" for its true nature. It is a large patch of brown mold. He knows the information given in the block below and may now present what he wants when he wants to.

[sblock=Brown Mold]Brown mold feeds on warmth, drawing heat from anything around it. It normally comes in patches 5 feet in diameter, and the temperature is always cold in a 30-foot radius around it. Living creatures within 5 feet of it take 3d6 points of nonlethal cold damage. Fire brought within 5 feet of brown mold causes the mold to instantly double in size. Cold damage, such as from a cone of cold, instantly destroys it.[/sblock]

"That brown dust is a form of mould, and it is what has made this passageway so frigid," explains the arcanist. "If you get too near you could literally freeze do death in moments. Now, I think I have a way of dealing with it..." Olrich's voice trails off as he reaches for the bag containing his book of spells. He flips through the pages for a few moments before settling on one and scanning it for a few seconds. Those watching carefully might catch a small glimpse of energy roiling in his eyes as he does so.

The arcanist closes his spellbook and holds it to his chest with his left hand while he steps up to the ledge. He makes a few gestures, says a few short words, and then points at a patch of mould as a thin ray of icy white energy bursts from his fingertip to strike at it.

OOC: Use my quick study exploit to swap out jolt in favour of ray of frost, and then cast it.

[section]Twist eyed the rime of frost with interest but stayed away from it. He and his kin knew cold was a killer; it crept on cat feet in the dead of winter and stole a ratling's breath. When Olrich took out his spellbook, Twist watched the intrigue unfolding before him. Magic was beyond his ken, and he admired anyone who could channel it. [/section]

Vandor peers down the passageway.

"Mold that freezes people in seconds? Very interesting. I wonder if it could be used for non-harmful purposes?"

Sure enough when Olrich casts the cantrip at the floor below a small patch of the brown dust turns grey. Olrich estimates that at the rate that he could cast the cantrip it would take at least half an hour in order to clear enough of the brown dust to make it safe to get down to the body. But then he realizes that it would actually take longer because as he kills off the dust it will become harder to target areas precisely. A better estimate would be closer to an hour. From above Zeta is fairly sure that the body has some nice equipment. At least a nice chain shirt and crossbow.

"Wait," Zeta says. "Maybe there's a way to spread that around more. Empty some water over it."

She demonstrates, splashing water from her waterskin.

"Once there's enough water, use your magic to freeze the water. It may take more than one, but it should mean you don't have to hit tiny patches, one at a time."
