D&D 5E [IC] Uller's Out of the Abyss

While Erevan is "communing" with Ezraen, Orsik shrugs. "Let's get started! Derendil, I think if roll those big boulders out of the way we can carry the smaller ones. Just don't move anything unless I tell you!" They start moving broken rocks out of the way.

OOC: Understood.

I can respond briefly to a message cantrip?

Keep us updated on the progress. We will sit tight.

If Erevan sends a message after checking out the source of the splashing: We have a problem! There is a giant ooze, like one of those black puddings. Don't think it's spotted us yet.

OOC: I assumed that the first one was when you emerged, and so it was before things started happening, but if you send regular updates, then we can keep you updated too. If not, then we may have to fight this beast... :p

Right. The message cantrip can be used to communicate in real time as long as Erevan wants. So the initial message was received right away. As long as Orsik and Derendil are digging progress is being made and things are good.

About the time Orsik thinks you are about to break through is when the black puddings make themselves known.

Basically it boils down to this...dig faster and risk a collapse or dig slower and risk a fight with at least two beasties. At work now...hopefully I can narrate it better this evening.

After spotting the oozes, Ezraen motions for the others to head back to the cave. Once back in the cavern, Ezraen begins prepping everyone for a possible standoff...

In the cave, everyone gathers towards the back. The water is rising. One of the black puddings passes into the original tunnel you were trapped in. It doesn't seem to notice you but they are moving about and seem to be searching for something. Prey? A way out or the water? You aren't sure.

On the surface, Orsik and Derendil try to pick up the pace. Erevan keeps thinking the next stone will be it. Orsik is standing in the hole and pulls at a large stone and suddenly the hole collapses. Orsik nearly slips into the cave below but Derendil grabs him. For those below there is a sudden minor avalanche of stone splashing into the cave. When you look up you see a dwarf's feet dangling from the ceiling.

There is a black shadow moving in the passage...

OOC: you can start to exit the cave one by one. What's the order?

Ezraen starts ushering the others up (hopefully someone lowers a rope) and readies an action to channel divinity if the ooze starts coming their way. I'll hold it off, if need be. You guys just get up there!

He then looks at Glabbagool, Will you come with us? Will you be able to follow us up there?

Erevan feels as if he had been holding his breath for a long time when finally, finally the entrance to the cave opened up. His heart jumps.

"We're through!" the elf replied unnecessarily to Ezraen through their magical communication, before lowering a rope to make the climbing easier.

Glabbagool stands next to Ezraen not moving while the others quickly scramble up the ropes. You can almost see the gears turning. It kind of stretches like to reach toward the opening. It is obviously a futile effort. "I don't think I can. I can't change my shape or climb up to the top of the Everything like the oozes can."

Everyone else is up but Ezraen and Glabbagool. The water is about knee deep. Ezraen can see one of the black pudding creatures appear in the passage, about 30' away but then it fades back down the passage. Whatever they are, they don't seem to be able to detect you (probably the noise and confusion from the water). "I must hide". It starts to move away toward the north corner of the room.
