D&D 5E [IC] Uller's Out of the Abyss

In his haste to get himself to safety, Erevan lets the rope slip through his fingers more than he intended, and the elf starts to fall down. When he almost hits Drum, the nimble rogue manages to get his feet under him, steps once on the wall and once on Drum's head (well, at least Erevan thinks it's the myconid's head) and avoids crashing into his allies. He does, however, fall on the floor in a less-than-elegant, face-down fashion.

"Ouch," he says after a moment, before standing up.

The gaggle of captives make all make their way down the rope. The spiders, even in the dark of Sarith's spell are content sup on the carcasses of the drow and the quaggoth. The quaggoths are thrown into fear and disarray by the spell. They roar and anger and it sounds like some of them may even be taking swipes at eachother in the confusion.

OOC: let's see if one or two fall from the ledge...11+ at least one falls. Odds, it's 1. 2 of it is evens.

From the sound of it, one drops into the webbing while you are climbing down. He makes quite a bit of racket then quiets down. You're not sure if he was attacked by spiders or just got smart and started working on freeing himself.

You're own descent is quite perilous. Many of you struggle and stumble, smash into rocks, drop from a little too high into the pool or injure yourselves on the ropes but you know you have little time to worry about it. Turvy slips pretty good, dislocates his arm and in pain releases his grip on the rope and drops from a height of about 80' into the pool and onto some rocks.

Ezraen is already at the bottom and has lowered himself into the pool when this happens. He clearly see's the little deep gnome slam into some rocks. Topsy seems surprisingly unconcerned. Ezraen focuses on helping others down and towards the shore. He let's Surana and Erevan know that Turvy is gone but then suddenly there he is...walking out of the pool and seemingly completely uninjured!

OOC: feel free to make some insight checks here DC 10)

Also, unrelated: I am assuming all three of you are alert to threats. I need you to make two Perception checks each.

First one is normal (DC 10). Second one is with disadvantage for those without darkvision (DC 12) as you are in dim light.

Surana, make one more check...athletics or acrobatics to avoid damaging Drum in your fall. It takes 1d6 if you fail. DC 5.

As you were descending, you notice the demons are still flying about, taking swipes at each other and what not. One of the Chasmes is killed and drops to the cavern floor. That leaves three chasmes and one vrock...wait...one vrock? Wasn't there two? You realize you haven't seen the one since it lost it's bearings in a darkness spell and crashed into a stalactite and fell.

Surana notices that both Topsy and Turvy are acting strangely after Turvy's fall...like a combination of fear and shame.

OOC: I'll wait on Erevan before I talk about the second perception check.

OOC: Erevan also notices that one of the vrocks never rejoined the fight after falling in the early part of the battle

Erevan is the only character to be surprised...the monster rolled very poorly on it's stealth (5). All the NPCs were using passive perception (it's weird to me that passive perception can sometimes be better than active...fortunately the creature is closing in on Orsik (who is not surprised).

As you all grab gear and start moving from the pool (it's mostly waste deep for the taller creatures), you notice lots of garbage floating on the surface and debris on the bottom. The drow have been tossing their trash over the cliff and into this pool for decades, perhaps centuries. Fortunately most of it is carried away by the stream. But one thing most of you notice is a dark oily patch moving rapidly towards you. It is clearly driving against the current. Those of you attuned to Drum hear a voice in your head: "Flesh for the faceless lord!"

OOC:
Everyone beats the monster (a gray ooze) as it starts moving across the pool towards you. Erevan is surprised. Everyone else may act. Order will be:

group1
Ezraen
Surana
Erevan becomes no longer surprised but moves to group3

group2
NPCs
Gray Ooze

group3
Erevan

Everyone take a moment and checkout the front page of the RG thread and make sure I have your hp and AC correct. After this encounter, we're going to reduce the number of NPCs that are 'active' during combats to 3. Two from the PCs (Orsik, Bertram, Klep) and one from the NPCs (Derendil, Sarith, Eldeth, Jimjar, Topsy, Turvy, Drum, Shushar...well...not Shushar, he never fights). You can choose. For this fight they will all be active but will generally try to move to safety.

OOC: RG has me at 12hp, but I should be at the full 15, unless you're imposing a "read your damn character sheet" penalty and letting the damage from my (not-)fall stand. I wouldn't fault any DM for doing so; fair dues.

As for my AC: It's currently correct, but you may want to make a note on the RG that it gets bumped up by 1 (to 17) any time I'm dual-wielding.

Upon seeing the disgusting ooze flowing toward the party, Surana rushes for the water's edge and hurriedly begins untying the rope holding Drum to her back. When she finishes, she sets him on the water's edge with a warning--"stay away from the fight, but near the group"--before hurrying back toward Orsik and the ooze.

OOC: good catch. Fixed. Why aren't you dual wielding now? Surely you could have grabbed two shortswords in the tower.

Orsik and Klep have their spell foci now. Here are the spells they have prepared if anyone would like to make a suggestion:

Klep:
Cantrips Known:
Mage Hand, Vicious Mockery

1st Level Spells (Spell Slots: 2/2):
Heroism, Faerie Fire, Detect Magic, Silent Image

Orsik:
Cantrips: Light, Mending, Sacred Flame, Spare the Dying
1st level Spell Prepared: Burning Hands, Bless, Create Water, Faerie Fire, Healing Word, Protection from Evil
1st Level Spell Slots: 2 per day

Here is what I'm thinking a gray ooze in water would be like (warning, NSFW)...if I was smart I would have tried to arrange it so you were all on a raft...
