Iconic example of characters? Yes.

The names of historic characters in spells? No, or at least put the name at the end so it doesn't mess up alphabetizing if I choose to have my own game world.

What both 3E and 4E didn't have? The only thing worth keeping from 1E? The extended examples of play with each player and DM speaking. I used to read those over and over in high school.

Now that we're in the information age, we can even go one better. So that we don't fill up the books with what might be fluff, show the iconics at every level and with a bit of backstory online. What costs more paper is practically when put online.
