So I had an idea the other day for a super simple XP system to replace the existing table and chart.
The amount of XP you need to level up is equal to the next level. So if you are level 1, you need 2XP to reach level 2. If you are at level 2, you need 3XP to reach level 3, etc. You can keep track as either a "running total" (so a 4th level character would have 9XP, and need an additional 5 to level for a total of 14XP) - OR- you can just keep track for each level, with any "leftover" XP between level advancements just being added to the next level (so if you were 1 point shy of leveling, and got 3xp, you'd have 2 XP at the start of your next level moving towards the next one).
XP is not based on CR of encounters, but instead how the GM decided things went that session, modified by character level. I think it works better for "the math" of leveling, and allows the GM to take a holistic approach to the game rather than breaking down everything down by "encounters" for XP. You could use encounters instead (maybe The amount of XP you gain per encounter is equal to its CR. So a CR 1/4 encounter is worth 0.25 XP. A CR 2 encounter is worth 2XP, etc.) but I'm not sure on the math for it.
So the GM can assess the session using one of these as a guideline:
A. Things were epic (they finished a major story arc, etc.): 2/3 Character Level (round up).
B. Things went really well: 1/2 Character Level (round up)
C. Things went good: 1/3 Character Level (Round to nearest tenth).
D. Things went poorly or didn't do much: 1/3 Character Level (round down, minimum possible is 0 XP).
So level 4 characters have a fantastic session? They get 2XP each. Have an okay session? They get 1.3 XP each. Did they sit around the tavern trying to pick pockets of unnamed NPCs and refuse to do any adventuring? 1XP each.
8th level characters had an epic session, rescuing the Army of Goodness and routing the army of Evilness once and for all? They get 6xp. A really good one? They get 4xp. An okay one? They get 2.6xp. Did they not do any adventuring at all, instead just went shopping the whole session? They get 2xp.
It is also possible for the GM to give individual awards with this method. So if one player has a major achievement that session, you might give them an award of 2/3 level while the rest of the group got 1/2, etc.
Thoughts?
