any ideas or concepts for a "white" wizard necromancers, to give it abilities that would be different then it's black or clerical counterparts?

What are you using as a basis for "black" necromantic powers? The only "official" ability that could be considered a part of a necromancer would be the Death Domain power. Its opposition would be the Sun Domain power. The core system really doesnt have a system for "Necromancers" other than being a specialist wizard in the school of necromancy. If you wanted to limit yourself further, choose spells that can be used ot fight undead, not mimic their powers or create them.

Or am I missing something in what you are asking?

Mongoose's Encyclopedia Arcana: Necromancy has a
spectral loremaster that learn skills, tongues, and stuff by discussing with spirits of deceased persons.
Might be an interesting angle for a "white" lnecromancer.

Well, going right by the description of necromancer in the dnd core rulebook I...

"Necromancy: spells that can manipulate, create or destroy life force".

By going by this defination, perhaps there is a means to change the overall function of the necromancer, perhaps more of a victor von frankenstein or dr. Moreau, then a undead summoning wizard.

Also, perhaps a way of fusing souls to get desired effects, perhaps with willing participants.

Additionally, I fully understand that the original interpretation of a necromancer was originally a medium for the spirits, and that could be a useful area of development for a white necromancer.

This is only sort of the right topic ... but its always seemed to me that so long as those you raise come willingly, then its at least non-black necromancy.

Like say ... an necromancer wizard who runs a city state. His people may never need worry about enlistment into military service, or even do much grunt work. All of that could be done by the spirits of the anscestors and perhaps even those that dared make war against this city.

Now, I ask you, what's wrong with eliminating people's need to work? It could be the beginning of an intellectual golden age.

and if we use Aristotle's nutritive, locomotive, and rational parts of the soul, then most of the time all we really need is to locomotive, depending on interpretations. That means that the rational part of the soul can still kick it in the underworld.

As for intelligent undead .. if someone wants to be a vampire in exchange for some service to the state, is it wrong to allow them to be so, or is it wrong to refuse them?

Wheeh .. Yep, I've got to play my descendent of kings necromancer wizard god-slayer one of these days.

My first double post! I'm one of us!

Oh yeah, also, the before-mentioned descendent of kings god-slaying wizard necromancer is also a paladin.

Check out the Hollowfaust sourcebook from Sword and Sorcery Studios--it's probably the best of their soft-cover supplements. It has a ton of great ideas for necromancers: Animators (masters of corporeal undead--mainly zombies and skeletons), Mourners (necromantic bards), and Speakers of the Dead (who deal with incorporeal undead--laying ghosts to rest and stuff). The necromancers tend to be neutral, not good, but it's a great place to start looking for ideas.
