Well, how many editions has D&D had, anyway?

oD&D (Men & Magic, etc.)
Basic D&D (edited by Holmes)
Advanced D&D
Basic D&D (edited by Moldvay)
Basic D&D (edited by Metzner)
Advanced D&D 2nd Edition
Advanced D&D 2nd Edition (reprint, with minor changes)
Dungeons & Dragons Adventure Game
Dungeons & Dragons 3E
Dungeons & Dragons 3.5E

I'm not counting "Greyhawk" or "Player's Option", both which drastically changed systems.

I think there's a couple of other Basic variants as well.

Cheers!

No, there's an new edition of M:tG every year, so it'd be at 29th edition...the Ranger would still be getting the shaft... :D

So that's ten? In about thirty years? About one every three years, then? :)

well, unlike with M:tG, we can still use stuff from previous editions, often with minor or no adjustment. ;)

If you want to complain about the costs of purchasing new revisions, consider if D&D were the Windows OS:

Windows
Windows 3.0
Windows 3.11
Win95
Win98
WinMe
WinXP

At how much to upgrade each time (if you upgraded, that is) and given that certain components wouldn't work either with earlier or later versions of the OS ...

D&D upgrades as a downright bargain, and less frequent to boot.

If D&D came out with a new edition as fast as Magic: the Gatheirng comes out with new editions, I'd force my entire group to start playing BESM or Savage Worlds.

you forgot Windows 3.1ed (the home PC version), Windows 3.11ed was for Workgroups (the office version)

and Windows NT and Windows 97 although it wasn't released. and Windows 2000 before ME or XP

but i find the comparison with Microcraps products to be the closest analogy.;)

i still prefer T$R DOS.:D
