If EN World was a village, who would be whom?

I guess I'd be the village educator/teacher. Or bartender. Or both. :)

Barring that, I'll go for menial laborur.
Bartender's taken, but comely ladies and elves of all description are encouraged to apply as servers at the Soaring Pelican.

:D

I'd be the elven carpenter that looks on in horror as the dwarven smith quenches his red-hot blades in ale. ;)

I'd be the really lousy apprentice mage. The one whose always turning random people into rabbits by accident or losing the all-powerful artifact that I was supposed to carry back to the tower. Everybody needs one of those.

Or I could be the guy in the bar who says "Times are tough."

Whole town full of slackers and layabouts, competing for positions at bars and brothels.

We all gonna starve to death unless a whole lot more somebodies volunteer for the "tillers of the soil" and "manufacturers of needed goods" routines.

Which really shouldn't be a problem, if you think about this as a methaphor for what we really do in this consensual hallucination instead of who we'd like to be in an RPG.

Who are the tillers of the soil at ENWorld? The people who spend hours generating things like Storyhours and special monsters and gaming resources so that we can collectively feed on them.

What are the needed goods at ENWorld? Interesting threads. Good replies to interesting threads. The kind of insightful commentary and praise that makes a storyteller want to slog through writing another installment.

Lots of us produce these things, which is why this is a destination site for me on a regular basis. There's always something good here to feed my mind or give me new tools for my creativity.

Sure we all spend some time hanging about socializing, but we work pretty darn hard at our socializing a lot of the time.

Anybody can sit in the couch and watch Buffy on TV.
Gamers enjoy that sort of thing, but then they haul out their creative tools and go to the effort of creating and slaying their own monsters.

Sites where people show up just to read someone else's work are pure entertainment. A site where people show up to create entertainment, that's work. And art. And magic, too. Because creative folks like us, we like a little effort in our entertainment.

Eh, I'm not worried, villagers are nummy!

Thanks, alsih2o.

In addition to your strange and wonderful "pots" (Of which I think D20 Postmodern was my favorite), you shouldn't forget your contributions as grand marshall at village events such as the Ceramic DM competitions. Not only do you produce goods, you also inspire other folks to get out there and go higher faster and farther.

Easy to picture you going about the town reminding folks that if they don't get their sticks and bells on and come dance the crops won't be as abundant or sweet . . .

Also, I realized the whole reason I got addicted to the Boards at first was the opporunity to homestead. The "Baby Pictures of the Elder Gods" thread was the first place I ever put a body of my work up on the Internet for the world to see.
And it felt good.
Real good.

My own little plot of earth to till, and no overlord to tell me what to grow in it, or extract taxes from it, so long as I consented to the general culture of the community. Which turned out to be pretty easygoing and friendly.

The prairies out here are fertile, and they go on for miles . . .

My anarcho-syndicalist commune utopia in the wilderness . . .

Can I be Bob? Every village has a Bob. I want to be that Bob. The village Bob. Thats me. That way when your giving directions you can say "Just go down the street and take a right after Bob's Place. Can't miss it."

The village Bob.
