If Paizo had gone 4E ...

Yes

If Paizo had gone 4e I *might* have considered converting. As it is I spent more money on 3.x than I did 2e, I like 3.x more than 4e and I'm very glad that a company who produces quality products like Paizo is sticking with 3.5 and even making their own improved version. Given the quality of products Paizo publishes I would also have been convinced to try and convert over to 4e if they did. WotC's default world is boring (in my mind) and they have torn apart the Forgotten Realms that got me into D&D in the first place so seeing Paizo make a fantasy world that is both classic and full of flavor for 4e and modules of true quality (sadly I've only seen a couple come out of Dungeon that were worth my time and a none of the published modules have yet to strike me as anything astounding) would have been enough for me to push my players into switching over. Whether we would have or not is a matter for speculation though as I look at things we probably would have either stuck with 3.5 or used one of the alternative systems like Castles and Crusades or True 20. As it is I am very glad they decided to stick with 3.5.

We're going to sell out all of the copies of the Beta we brought to Gen Con within 10 minutes of the hall opening tomorrow (we fell _just_ short of a complete sell-out today). We just launched what looks to be a very successful organized play campaign with more than 40 tables over the course of 8 hours. Many, many gamers purchased 4 or 5 copies of the Beta for their entire group.

I think we'll be sticking with 3.5 for a good long while. I couldn't be happier with how things are turning out.

Excellent!

Maybe the DnD world is just split in two and never the twain shall meet. I just looked at the Beta for Pathfinder... my eyes went cross. With over 400 pages of dense material I thought at first this might be great, and I did a fair bit of reading, but after playing 4E since it's release, I like the minimalist approach. I like the control of the DM and the watering down of the rule mongers. For me, and I emphasis that, "for me", I just want mechanics that work and are printed in a font larger than "7" or "8".

Maybe that is why we keep this debate and the flaming alive, some just like the high detail, some do not. I still maintain it's the same game, others would argue that, but essentially this type of discussion that is going on will continue and continue and continue forcing new players away from EnWorld because of the volleys being shot from the pro 4E camp and the pro 3x/Paizo camp. Frankly it's getting too much, no matter how civil the thread title begins.

Maybe the moderators should open up a whole new forum "3x vs 4E Smackdown: Go nuts Fanboys and Shrills"

It's kinda like the way the Rules Forum was before 4E.

Everyone believes they are right.

And, in some ways they are. :)

Ah... So there's the energy of the rules forum gone to.
Maybe not a big surprise - rules lawyering in 3E go a little stale, since the same topics appeared again and again, sometimes in different variations ("Can my enlarged Fighter grapple a Giant Constrictor that was balefulyl polymorphed into a Giant Grab ?"). Of course, the same was true for General - "Paladin eats baby kobolds for breakfast - should he lose his powers?"

Good to hear - competition usually tends to bring out the best in both sides - I look forward to 4e and Pathfinder spurring each other on to higher quality (even if I'm never going to touch Pathfinder - not my style).
