If Paizo had gone 4E ...

We're going to sell out all of the copies of the Beta we brought to Gen Con within 10 minutes of the hall opening tomorrow (we fell _just_ short of a complete sell-out today). We just launched what looks to be a very successful organized play campaign with more than 40 tables over the course of 8 hours. Many, many gamers purchased 4 or 5 copies of the Beta for their entire group.

I think we'll be sticking with 3.5 for a good long while. I couldn't be happier with how things are turning out.

Fantastic news Erik. Got some spare for GenCon UK? :D

I missed the Paizo boat, just getting back into DnD after Gygax' death. But having played some 3x stuff and a few non WotC stuff, I'd like to see Paizo move to 4E. I too am miffed about the errata fiasco but I find that 4E is so accessable, even my wife is running an adventure now for myself and the teens... if Piazo offered something, from what I've heard and briefly seen, I would definatly buy their first offering.

I'm not holding my breath though.

I wish you guys all of the luck in the world and hope that you guys can sustain Pathfinder forever. I'll be getting to the con tomorrow, and hopefully I'll get there quick enough to get a copy of the beta as I'm really interested in seeing how its turning out.

If Paizo were to publish 4e products, I wouldn't care.

If Paizo were to take Pathfinder APs, Golarion, or Pathfinder/Gamemastery modules 4e, I'd stop buying from them.

But my real answser is more complicated than that though. I was not a Dragon or Dungeon subscriber but when I picked up the occasional issue, Paizo's stuff was top notch. My opinion of WotC's products was neutral, some I like, some I disliked. Most (by-far) of my gaming $ went to 3rd-party publishers (as it does today).

After the WotC license-pullback debacle (reasons notwithstanding, it was handled poorly), I came to have a tremendous respect for Paizo. They were dealt a hand of proverbial crap. It could have been a death knell for them. Instead, they decided to reinvent themselves by releasing a new RPG world with a host of products set in that world. I read the teasers for Golarion and Pathfinder APs and loved what I read. I preordered a Pathfinder AP subscription.

They walked the wire of frustration vs. ring-kissing as they waited for the 4e rules and details of the new OGL. They were hounded to commit to 4e sight-unseen on their own boards by customers threatening to leave them if they didn't switch and always replied with professionalism, courtesy, and respect. Over the course of that year, I compared the official responses coming out of Paizo to those coming out of WotC. While I'm sure wonderful people work at both companies, it became clearer with each release which one was better at trying to satisfy their customers while treating them with respect.

I fully expected to hear that Pathfinder and Golarion would go 4e. Thankfully, WotC fumbled that ball as well and the combination of OGL delay, eventual OGL-death, and the release of the restrictive GSL resulted in Golarion staying 3.x. The announcement of a Pathfinder RPG was more than I could have hoped for.

So I'm happy where things ended up. Sure, if the GSL is sufficiently revised, it might alter Paizo's course somewhat, but I think the Pathfinder RPG is past the point of no return and will be the flagship product (THANK GOD!). If 4e is successful for WotC, good for them.

But ultimately, what I want is for Paizo, Green Ronin, Mongoose, and my other favorite RPG publishers be able to publish, compete, and thrive without having their existence tied to the existence of a WotC license or edition. If WotC remains the 800-lb gorilla because they make the best products - kudos to them. However, I don't ever want to see WotC derail a company the way they almost did Paizo.

PS: I understand WotC's business reasons for doing so, that they had the right to do so, and from a competitive standpoint may have been smart to try and do so. I still don't like the way it went down.

I don't think WotC tried to "derail" Paizo, but I think WotC did screw the pooch by taking Dungeon and Dragon away from Paizo - especially when WotC didn't have a (good) plan in place as to how to maintain the quality found in those mags within Paizo.

I would buy Paizo products either case, as the flavor and artwork in the things I've seen blow WotC out of the water. I play many, many systems, 3.5/pathfinder and 4e included, so having them choose one or the other for adventures only matters to me when I'm filing them on my computer.

I am planning to order the Pathfinder RPG final release in large part because of the decision to have an open playtest. It's been a joy seeing the system grow, and trying it out makes me want to throw money in Paizo's direction. So cheer Mona and co.!

most people who are holding out will eventually convert.
Not that simple. Some will. I think just as many will just skip the edition, like those apocryphal people who say "I skipped 2E, 3E brought me back."

Think that, but to a power of 10, because 2E really wasn't that different from 1E, whereas 4E is a really, really big departure this time around.

You've heard it here first - Paizo is SELLING OUT! ;)

Congratulations - it definitely looks like you guys took the right decision... (Well, not for me, I would have loved some 4E Paizo Adventure Path in the near future...)
