If there was one thing about 3rdE that you could change, what would it be?

Instead of "fantasy art" (yawn) I'm thinking lo-fi illustrations and cartoons like the stuff that is peppered through the 1st edition books. Kinda reflects the fact that the game should be fun. The art in the 3E books make it look like the game should only be played by tossers ... IMNSHO ;)

Fantasy art? Yawn? You just made my day, I'm going to laugh the whole way home from work! LOL!

I advocate either giving all characters access to the Improved Expertise feat as a normal combat ability, or giving characters inherent Dodge bonuses based on their class and level (such as in Ken Hood's Grim and Gritty system).

I've also considered doing this in my own campain. It really makes me wonder why Improved Expertise is so high up on the feat tree.

Anyway, AC is my biggest beef with d20. I like the idea of characters fighting unarmoured, a la the three amigos. Or was that musketeers?

I'm looking forward to Dragon 301 - Swashbuckling.

The Classic D&D with those hints being used to produce a game which is some ways similar to AD&D. (By which I mean more stringent restrictions on demi-human limits, etc.) Possibly even call the book "Greyhawk". ;)
What elements from AD&D does anyone miss? And would you need a book to tell you not to allow Dwarf Wizards?

Here's something that has already been said.

Make higher levels less reliant on magic items

Now for something that hasn't been said:

Bring back GULLY DWARVES

I'd scrap the entire character advancement system and replace it with something that was a little more organic. I'm sick and tired of classes and levels and prestige class requirements and blah blah blah. I want to pick up a couple points in a skill here, maybe learn a few new tricks with a weapon there, and so on. But I don't want to be FORCED to wait until I "level" and then pick a "class."

That can be completely turned around. Do you need a book to tell you to allow dwarven wizards? I want a paladin/assasin PC i hope that a new edition comes out so that the rules say I can oh boy! Spoon fed comes to mind LOL!

It is far easier to remove what you don't like than it is to put into place elements that you don't have but wish to incorporate; the former is simple Rule Zero decision making, whereas the latter is game design in its most essential aspect.

You've got to choose the level limits appropriately; that's somwhat difficult. It does throw what game balance 1E has out of whack, as well as making demi-humans too popular for some people.

(The extra feat + skill points for humans in 3E more than make up for the possibility of dwarven wizards, IMO)

Cheers!
