If you wanted to create the classic fighter/mage, what Feats would you take?

Past the level 2.... 3-17 Fighter... make sure you get your 4 attacks hps and stuff then 18-20 is when you start the path of magic...

Let's also assume he is neutral in alignment, ruthless and power hungry, and he is determined to achieve high levels (that is, Epic levels) at all cost and as speedily as possible.

Just a quick comment. Such a person as you described would probably be Lawful Neutral, not Neutral. Being as determined as this individual is, that marks him as a lawful soul.

driven yes, but looking for the quickest way to power. that would be a sign of a chaotic streak, not wanting to take his time and do things right. Neutral seems fine to me GK.

Hey there, folks!

I wanted to express my appreciations for the advice. :)

I guess I'm sorta thinking in terms of ... for lack of a better term ... Feat Paths.
There really are a lot of Feats (just from WOTC alone, nevermind the d20 products.)
A character can only have a few of them, and has to make the best of what he has.

It is agonizing, having to choose one of two really good (and really badly needed) feats, when your character is entitled to choose a new feat.

Nevermind any rules implied by the thread (that I might have set forth, that is.)
Feel free to post any feat suggestions or feat paths you want.
I could use the help!

Yours Sincerely
Edena_of_Neith

Still Spellcasting.

Being able to cast spells while wearing that heavy armor. (A fighter who has a full-plate armor and shield and then decides to ad some Shield protection can be hard to hit)

I'll prepare a write up for you, Edena... your stepping into my specialist territory...

All I play are caster-fighters... whether it's multiclass, paladin, ranger, warpriest, arcane archer, assassin, psionic warrior, or anything else that can cast at least up to 4th level spells...

I should have a pretty good set-up using just WOTC products in about a day... I'll post it to this thread. Keep in mind that although my path isn't combat optimized -it is grown from experience on what you NEED to take in order to survive. I've got the experience in that field.

Here is a tentative Feat Path for a wizard:

Free Feat: Spellcasting Prodigy
Free Feat as Human: Enlarge Spell
3rd level: Energy Substitution
5th level (metamagic) : Extend Spell
6th level: Sculpt Spell
9th level: Persistant Spell
10th level (metamagic) : Maximize Spell
12th level: Energy Admixture
15th level: Repeat Spell
15th level (metamagic) : Twin Spell
18th level: Heighten Spell
20th level (metamagic) : Quicken Spell
23rd level: Improved Spellcasting
26th level: Improved Metamagic
29th level: Improved Metamagic
32nd level: Improved Metamagic
35th level: Multispell
38th level: Improved Metamagic
41st level: Multispell

I conceive of the wizard above as being much like the 2nd edition wizard.
He is helpless in hand to hand combat.
He is fried, if an opponent breaks through and reaches him.
He must rely on the fighters to protect him and form a shield against enemy penetration.

He has not specialized in any school or in any particular way of throwing magic (such as rays.)
His spells have no particularly augmented penetrating power (spell focus, spell penetration.)

His job is to sit back behind the fighters and throw spells.
The more spells, the better.
And hopefully, he will fire his spells first, before the enemy can react.

Obviously, in the example above, the character did not take a Prestige Class.

Prestige Classes (apparently) offer free Feats to the character, and they can in addition speed up the acquistion of Feats by the normal process.

It is too bad there is no spell that allows one to have a Feat.
I know that a Wish spell will not do this.

So, the character above must find magical items that confer Feat abilities, or have a friendly PC mage make such Feat-conferring items for him.

Otherwise, the mage above is going to be severely deficient in many areas.

For example, Improved Initiative and Perfect Initiative are great choices for the mage.
He who fires first, can win the battle without the enemy getting off a single reply.

It is not clear whether a character continues to gain bonus feats for character level (3rd, 6th, 9th, 12th, 15th, 18th) after reaching 21st level as a character.

Does the character retain these bonus feats for level, in addition to the bonus feats as a fighter and a mage?

Does anyone know the answer to this?
