I know its been asked a thousand time before, but what makes M/C Bas/Ex different from the later B/X/C/M rules that eventually made up the Rules Cyclopedia?

I don't have my copy with me, but does anyone recall if the RC has rules in it for using the races as races rather than classes?

Aaron.

The M/C Bas/Ex rules are very similar to the B/X/C/M/RC rules.

The main difference has to do with the Thief Ability chart. Thieves' abilities progress more rapidly in the B/C Bas/Ex version, whereas they are scaled for 36 levels in the RC rules.

There are a few other minor differences (e.g. how many spells elves and magic-users have in their books, cleric spells at a certain levels around 10, some spell descriptions, etc.). But aside from the thief abilities, the mechanics are pretty much the same.

The RC does not have rules for using races "as races", but it does include rules for 36 levels of progression. Some of the Gazeteers included additional nonhuman classes (e.g. Dwarf cleric in the Rockhome GAZ, etc).

First, though I'd be happy to play any of them.

Me, too. Really wish this had been a multiple-choice poll.

I'd be willing and even happy to play any of them.

I'd prefer either 1E, Moldvay Basic, or Rules Cyclopedia. I dunno if I can put any one of them above the others, since each has traits I really like.

I chose 2ed only because the only thing that would get me to go back would be to revive a 2ed campaign we put on hold to give 3e a try. That one campaign would be hard to convert but would be worth playing again. (High level planescape).

Sorry - I'd choose - and have chosen - 3.x over any game system. I just like it; it works for me.

Most of my gaming group wants to go HERO, though. bleah.

I voted for none of them, because I wouldn't go back. 1e came close. Diaglo will be miffed there's no OD&D option, not that it made any difference to me.
