if your DM gave you 200,000 in magicals-what would you buy?

Can you spend any amount you want? By the RAW, you can not spend more than half your money on one item. But that is if you were following the character wealth rules. If that is the case, you can't spend more than 100,000 on any of your items.

Could you tell us where that rule is, Riga?

I don't think that rule actually exists in the RAW. The section on Magic Items as Gear in the DMG (pg.199) does have some advice on restricting spending on a single item when creating and equipping characters at a higher level.

As far as I'm aware there's no such rule, its just a popular houserule.

However, the DMG (page 199) offers a few suggestions for starting items for characters higher than 1st level.. one of these is to limit the player to 1/4 of his total on any one item, so that would be 50k in this case. Another suggestion is the item by item veto, or also you can limit a player to only having access to 'minor' magic items, etc.

It also has some decent guidelines on pcs starting off with charged items and magic items they created themselves.

Lesser rod of extend just to keep those mage armors and greater mage armors up all day. only 3K Cheap and useful. I might even spring for a regular one if I had that much to spend.

I would start out buying a few select pricier items, and then a lot of smaller items. If you avoid most of the big ticket items, you can get a LOT of little useful items.

This list is one of defense over offense (more useful for a Sorcerer who has offensive power out the ying yang):

75K Robe of the Archmagi
• +5 armor bonus to AC.
• Spell resistance 18.
• +4 resistance bonus on all saving throws.
• +2 enhancement bonus on caster level checks made to overcome spell resistance.

40K Ring of Freedom of Movement (40K, but worth it)

24K Cloak of Displacement, Minor

20K Portable Hole (can carry boatloads of other equipment and not be encumbered)

16K Headband of Intellect +4

15K Belt of Dwarvenkind (Infravision when needed is cool and +2 CON)

04K Gloves of Dexterity +2
04K Ring of Counterspells

Spend the left over 2K on scrolls (or cure potions).

If you drop the Robe of the Archmagi or the Ring of Freedom of Movement off of this list, you can fill in many of the other character slots (amulet, boots). A minor staff is also good for extra power when you run out of offensive spells.

Starting 12th level pc's. Wizards clerics are given an allowance of $200,000. Non magical making classes are allowed 150,000. The $ is the market price listed for items in the Dungeon Master Guide.

That seems unfair to the non-mages. "What do you mean I get less money? Do I not need it? How? Weapons are hellishly expensive, you know!"

why is everyone saying 200,000 is to much for a wizard?

this includes any and all magics he had made for himself and found...200,000 aint that much considering.....1 ring of elemental control is 200,000....think about it, grab a handfull of wands????he could get 4 to 6 wands and thats it pending level...then he has nothing else..

That's what I thought, but if Riga was going to make the claim then maybe he should try looking it up himself.
