Ignorance on the web

Of course the funniest(not a word) part is the ads by Google. They lead to the Satanic worship of dice and DnD tactics and others. You got to give it to commercialism

Since it was written 3 years ago I don't put much stock in it. Otherwise it would be as big as ENworld

My belief system is still intact after 20 years of living on the "EDGE" I'm stronger for having lived SO CLOSE to the devil for so long. Actually, it is like everthing else if you overdo it you can have the problems reported in all things.

I know I'm going to heaven :)

There is some serious irony in this thread. Do deeply sexist posts really belong in a thread where the whole point is to complain about a group being stereotyped?

hmmm

"They roll poly-sided dice to determine the various intelligence and dexterity ratings of their alter-ego characters, which are given fictitious names."

As opposed to those single sided dice out there?

I was talking to a fellow churchgoer the other day--she was mentioning a particular famous person she admired who played Dungeons and Dragons which she thought was messed up. I responded with "Why do you think that?" and she said "Isn't it satanic?" and I grinned and said, "I don't know--I've played it for years. What do you think?"

The problem is that there is a lot of ignorance but also some people of whatever religious belief would rather focus on demonizing some other group than actually doing what their spiritual beliefs claim they are meant to be doing. For Christians this includes sharing the message of God's salvation through the story of Christ, being good to our neighbor, praying for others, being charitable to the poor and having honesty and integrity. There are all kinds of problems that any given society has that are way more important than whether or not people are playing a fantasy roleplaying game.

You know what separates us from the close minded nutcases who post on threads like that? We, as a group, tend to be a little more open minded, know that there are multiple sides to every situation, and can think rationally.

And one more thing separates us. We can appreciate a joke, we have a sense of humor, and know that lightly joking comments can be taken in the spirit in which they are offered: levity and humor.

I read it again, and this is my favorite line:

Jeez, lady, way to ignore 30 years of arguments about alignment!

I would argue that intent is essentially irrelevant when it comes to deciding what constitutes acceptable discourse. One almost certainly could not make a racist joke here without being moderated; why is a sexist one ok? The spirit in both cases would presumably be the same.

I'm not going to go down the road of Ultimate Political Correctness (I have seen forums where using the word 'dumb' to describe an idea is moderated as being a slur against people who can't speak) but the irony here was too much to ignore. "LOL women just want your car/money" jokes stopped being funny around 50 years ago, if they were even funny then.

Given that we all belong to a group that is still often maligned by mainstream society, sometimes in a funny way (Comic Book Guy), sometimes in a non-funny way (Mazes and Monsters), it constantly amazes me how little we think about our attitudes towards other groups - especially when those attitudes reinforce the bad stereotypes that already exist about us ("Male gamers are misogynists/bad with women/have no social skills.")

Thank god you're here to dispel this vicious rumor!

It's an urban legend that's been with us since... currency, probably. Though back then it was probably "goats/gold".

Cheers, -- N
