Ignorance on the web

So, how bad is that that my first impression when looking at that was *not* "oh, nice car" but, rather, "Voltron key! Awesome!"?
Sorry to disapoint. You're right though; how awesome would it be to go cruising down the strip in your own giant mecha lion with an obnoxious back beat blasting on the stereo? The only problem? It's a one seater... :\

Admit it: You just want to dress up like an orc and parade through a major city! :p

While I will admit that would be a side benefit, I would dress up like an orc anyway. Especially if it freaked people out. Scaring people is a hobby of mine, rpgs are a way of life.

It seems that a pretty vocal contingent of fundamentalists have a real problem separating between Real Life and Fiction.

QFT, although I wouldn't limit it to fundamentalists. It seems like every time well-meaning people of *any* persuation stir up a "moral panic", it has its roots in them having less facility to distinguish between reality and fantasy than the people they're trying to "protect". Meanwhile those of us who have our heads screwed on straight either a. wish they'd give it a rest, or b. wish they'd complain about the aspects of whatever it is they're whining about that are actually "legitimate" to complain about.

Peace & Luv, Liz

Though, like I said, I've known D&D players who absolutely suffer from the same problem. :)

It's just fascinating to me, as a scholar of religion, to see people apply the same rules to reading the bible ("It's all literally true") to reading the PHB or Harry Potter. And then I wonder if there's some pattern of thought that maybe makes such beliefs make more sense to them than to most folks, or if it's just a case of people who need to be angry at something finding something to be angry about.

Well, it's not that I want religious discussions, per se, it's just that I was wondering about them. I've never really seen anything devolve into actual insults, the worst I've seen in a religious debate is one side simply being stubborn. I was just curious, is all, it just seemed that everybody was really worried about something I've never personally seen any big problems with, is all. If you've got people going around tossing insults and such, though I agree is should be stopped.
I've seen a couple in the past get pretty nasty. You are talking about something that can be a core part of someone's identity. It is such an emotional issue for some people that they have difficulty remaining calm in the face of what they percieve as an attack on their very being. When things start to go downhill, the replies pick up their own momentum, more and more them getting posted faster and faster. While the mods can step in, there are times when it takes a little while for a mod to get to a particular thread and shut it and the argument/flaming down. During that delay, a lot of damage can be done. I seem to recall a heated period a couple of years back. For a while afterwards, posting seemed to be down in general and discussions much more muted. It is simpler to just make it clear it is not an acceptable topic than to try and clean up afterwards.

Are you saying that Fighters do not really get the good BAB, but that this was only a metaphor for the aggresiveness of those who learned to defend themselves? ;)

No problem. All you have to do is graft a hitch onto it and tow a trailer.

Because religion and politics are two topics that people are very passionate about. So passionate in fact, that sometimes even really close friends avoid speaking on the subject because the truth is so obvious you just can't understand why he insists on being so wrong.

Practically every thread on such topics becomes too intense; feelings and pride are hurt. Sometimes you can skirt the line by asking what and why the other person believes and just leaving it at that.

I have to agree. We had a thread on teacher pay once, after being told that wanting more pay for my job (I'm a teacher) meant I wasn't dedicated, well, I lost it little then.

Come on, it's all in good fun.

But okay: Would a female ENWorld member please step up and ask questions about spells to summon well-muscled, oiled lads clad only in loincloths and generally reduce us men to sex objects for a while? We don't mind.

In fact, I *am* a sex object. Whenever I offer a woman sex, she objects. ;)

I will step up and ask for a spell to summon a well-muscled scanty clad lad who does not only look great performs well in the bedroom but also gladly does housework , laundry and all the cooking.

So am I looking at an epic level spell for this one. :D

Now that I wouldn't see a problem with. Assuming you're not one of the few horrendous teachers out there (I got two of 'em in high school...), then you damn well do deserve a raise. I could easily understand getting angry over something like that. it's all this random religious stuff I can't see why people get so upset over. But then, I've never been the religious type, so I guess that has something to do with it...
