Illustrated Character Sheets

Azure Trance

First Post
As shown at the last page of this issues Dragon Magazine, they look fantastic. The site which sells them, www.gangus.net, has three sets - 1 for $30, 2 for $50 and all 3 for $60. Printed on cardboard stock for durability. To quote

Sets of 25
75 Different Characters in all.

Illustrated by renowned Third Edition Dungeons and Dragons Illustrator Arnie Swekel and Myself.

Printed on high quality card stock for extra durability.

Great for inspiring any role playing game scenario.Varying PC and NPC classes, alignments andraces, including creatures, angels, deities and fiends!

While they look fantastic, they only have a limited amount of space on the sheet for information. There aren't any boxes to fill in to find out what your total REF save is, for example, like in the Wizards character sheets. Hopefully they'll have a similar second page where we can put more info which is suitably decorated.

What do you think?

Let's see...

a) I have a computer. Instead of a character sheet I fill out by hand, I want one a character sheet that does the math for me. I'd also like summaries of the spells available to my spellcaster. (This is exactly what I'm doing on spreadsheets for character I'm using in an upcoming game.)

b) I'd like to also see full-color postcard size stand-ups I can display at the gaming table so people have a visualization of my character.

c) Ditto with a "Cardboard Heroes" or WotC token-style figure I can use with miniatures.

Nice pics, tho.

I can only comment on the rogue one in Dragon, not looked at the site. Personally I would not find it very useful as it is much to little space for what I want. I hope they don't run too many of these in Dragon and instead use the space for more gaming ideas.

Forget the players, I might get these as a DM for my NPCs. The artwork alone is enough to spur my mind on to higher reaches...

Of course I also know 4 or 5 other books I want right now that I can't justify purchasing... *grumble*

The artwork is nice, but not very PC-like. Might be nice for special NPC's by the DM. Just not enough room on the sheet for stat-stuff, especially if you're a spellcaster.

The site calls them "Character Cover Sheets," so I think the idea is to use standard character sheets for the more detailed info you might need. (Or just notebook paper, which I've always preferred.) Which is a nice way of dressing things up a little, and probably easier to use than a whole new sheet.

The price is a little high for their stated purpose, though I'd be much more willing to buy them without the spaces for stats, as a lot of them really are wonderful portraits that would be nice to have. I particularly liked set C.

How many of these are versions of illustrations done for WotC? I didn't spot anything in set A, and only the illustration from the D&D Santa Clause wallpaper/screensaver in set C, but a good bit of set B seems to be from Deities and Demigods. Some of them look nicer here in monochrome (and they'd be larger than the books versions), and I like the idea of using the planar sextant illustration as a character. There are a few other illustrations that seem like I might have seen them before, but I'm not sure.

By the way, Tony DiTerlizzi also has some full body character sheets for sale:

I'm "popular-feedback" ;D

I sent an e-mail asking Glen Angus if he would include a secondary character sheet which would be 'suitably decorated.' Like Aitch Eye said, he only used them for character cover sheets, but would confer with Arnie Swekel about the idea.

Then he sent me another e-mail saying he thought it over, and "it would be a great idea to include an extra sheet with just the backdrop design with space for extra information so people can photocopy and make as many extra info pages as they like." He also lowered the shipping and handling to a much lower price.

So ... now I really, really want one. :/

I bought a set of these last year at Gen Con, same time I picked up a Green Ronin Character folio for myself. not this Gen Con either mind you, but last year. THey've been around for a while. Great illustrations and an interesting idea but needs more space of course. Looking forward to seeing more of 'em as time goes on in Dragon.
