The problem that I would have is with Protection Devotion working in the same way is that it has no such wording (or even an indication) to show this feat working after a hit has been determined. It would seem (to me at least) that this is more a feat designed for the protection of others and not for the protection of yourself. In my opinion, this type of feat is an "oh hey, this <insert cr 17 monster> took an unexpected left for the caster, let's hope this +4 will negate at least SOME of the its."

Yes, the fact that other Devotion feats explicitly say they can be used in such a manner (after a hit is determined) and this one apparently does not is a much stronger case to make for it not working in that manner. Given that information, I suppose it could not be used after the hit is determined, though I wouldn't see the harm in houseruling it otherwise myself.

I never once said that I was going to strip someone of a class feature because they couldn't describe the physics to me properly. Not once. I haven't ever, nor would I ever. I can't necessarily explain the why behind every feat either, but this isn't part of the discussion though. We are discussing a specific feat and a specific set of circumstances, not favored enemy or sneak attack. The DM in this case thinks that their player is exploiting the rules, and the DM also said there had been other circumstances that were involved with said player.

You have a valid point concerning the physics of magic, and my point wasn't concerning the actual spell, but how the idea could be described by another player to maybe help them out seeing it from the DM's point of view. I have used real world examples before for describing charges, overpowers, even basic things like attacks of opportunity, even if it's just a way to visualize so our game can see it outside of it's current setting, but inside of the same context.
