Important - Please Do Not Send Me Money Via Paypal

perhaps somebody should make up a form letter, carefully worded and including all pertenent information, then the people with problems could fill in the blanks and send it off. It would cut down on the possibility of confusion and mucking up the system more but might help to show a unified face to this problem.

Could be a good idea jdavis, something like:

"Regarding my transaction with Mr. Russell Morrissey on MM, DD, YY, I would like you to know that I received the services paid for and I am very satisfied with them. I am concerned and upset that you are holding his account frozen and that he is unable to access the money I transferred to him using your service. Please release my payment so that he is able to access it or I will be forced to boycott your service in future transactions."

That's off the top of my head, so I'm sure it could use a little work and ironing out - do you think if enough people sent something like that it would make a difference?

Umm... the idea is good but I think that the way you said it may complicate things....

Very good points Tarchon, but since PayPal has not responded to my e-mail I don't think the exact wording of my general complaint e-mail will make a difference either way.

I have taken your advice, and have written a far more tactfully worded factual letter to both PayPal's CEO and their Senior VP of Customer Service explaining the situation as I see it. Since these letters are private business correspondence to specifically named individuals I will not be posting the text of them online, although I have forwarded Morrus a draft for his review as he was cc'ed on the letter.

Trying to be nonconfrontational and bland here. I just don't see why they have to freeze ALL the funds, especially for transactions which have already concluded. Seems like stealing to me. A company whose major tool is software should be able to use software to discern the difference between money that is in dispute and money which has been successfuly traded for a good or service.

I'm probably being naive, but oh well.

I don't think you are.

When my bank froze my accounts they only froze the amount in dispute. It just so happened that it was more than I had in the account.

As such, seeing as anyone who would put a Chargeback on Morrus would likely only do it for $25, freezing a few thousand would be a bit high.

Edit: Oh, and my bank is by no means known for its technological prowess. "Internet? Huh?" being something I expect to hear any day now.

I just got a response to mine (rather quickly - it arrived before I even got home), but it felt like the standard form "If you want to file a formal complaint" blah. I have replied and plan to employ patience and obstinance until I get my point across, stressing the fact that my payment was a donation and that I am completely satisfied with the transaction, other than their failure to complete it.

There is, to my knowledge, no such reason for the problems. There has been no explanation or information forthcoming from PayPal at all, other than a suddenly frozen account (with a few thousand dollars in it) and various bills which need paying and which can't be paid.

Even if I manage to get the account unfrozen fairly quickly (and I'm not holding out on much hope right now), I can't use a service which suddenly and without notice freezes an account and unfreezes it at their leisure. That makes it impossible to conduct the necessary business side of EN World which is needed to keep it running.

The fact that there is no regulatory body makes the whole thing even more precarious. The only avenue for complaint in such a situation is via the courts - and that is a lengthy and expensive endeavour, one which I shouldn't even need to comtemplate using just to be able to use my own money.

Don't get me wrong - I'll muddle through this one, even if I lose that money. I'm operating, for the moment, on the assumption that I won't ever see it. But it could have been worse - and what if it were, next time? What if I one day find myself unable to pay for the server for a couple of months in a row?

Paypal has several regulations governing it's use, not the least of which is provided above in the links to the BBI. I do more than a fair amount of business through paypal - I even have a paypal debit card, which I use almost daily. Issuing a debit card comes with insurance as well. If they put a hold on your account, there HAS to be a reason. A phone call, not an email, is what is required. They will help you. I've had 2 problems with the company, and both times, they helped me out rapidly. As a side note, my 'regular' bank has had 3 problems in that same amount of time.

It's good to know that PayPal works for some people.

Good news, folks - PayPal have unfrozen the account. Still no explanation of what happened, though.

I'll unstick this thread now. Thanks for all your patience! I should have an alternative ready soon.

Great news! I'm glad all that cash wasn't lost. I look forward to making another contribution to EN World :D
