Improved Critical

Or we could get rid of Vorpal and have it be the same with blunt weapons in that neither have an automatic kill in them. But I imagine more poeple like the automatic klill weapons like Vorpal. I know the PCs do, until I use it against them.

Have you seen my group's Vorpal variant? I didn't like the instant kill either.

Though I'm currently against inst kills at least those wihout a save, and even then I'm leery, in 2nd ed I had a blunt vorpal called crushing. Basically instad of cutting the head off it just shattered it into so many pieces it was for all intents and purposes removed. We described it as head exploding, or doing a scanners.

No, what is it?

It's gettin' late for me, so I'll start a new thread later this morning. Besides, instead of retyping everything, I'll insert links to the other threads where it's been discussed. So far, I'm pretty damn happy about it, and I haven't gotten anything but positive feedback about it, but I'd like to get more opinions.

At a certain point in power, instant kill attacks become almost necessary in D&D since healing magic can eliminate most injuries, death included...

Sounds like the infamous cranial burst bow from the PsiHB. :)

There is some truth in that. And as a general rule one full attack at high levels from a fighter type, buffed cleric etc. is almost always a instant kill, it just requires a couple more rolls. I had a cleric that frequently did mid hundreads in damage every round he got a full attack off. Which basically meant unless we were fighting a dragon, or a really high con fighter type, it was a instant kill.

The same holds true for just about any Knight of the Chalice, armed with a decent weapon (i.e. holy) that faces off with a demon, even a Balor. I have a player that damn near walks through even the toughest demons, but I don't mind, because that's what the Knight of the Chalice was meant to do. However, in any other situation, he's just a paladin.

uhm

Keen comp longbow plus imp critical plus keen arrows means... crit 17-20/*3? Cool. Yeah I know there are PrClasses to raise this.
