Although the rules don't mention it, letting go of a two-handed weapon with one hand or putting a free hand back on the weapon is a free action for you.

Good find, but for many anything from the pen of The Sage is proof of nothing.

Using Magic of Faerun, make your shield out of a heavy metal- alchemically treated gold or platinum- which will boost the spikes' damage as if it were one size larger.

The Rules of the Game articles were written by Skip Williams. He wasn't working for WotC at the time (other than freelance).

I think the 3.5 FAQ is mostly the work of Andy Collins, one of the main guys behind 3.5. I know he took over as Sage in Dragon in 2004.
