Actually, I must apologize to Mr. Moore. He made no retcon at all. His description of Grummsh in the article you mention never says, nor even implies, that he ever had two eyes. In his tale, Corellon takes a shot at Gruumsh's eye and misses. In other words, he did not shoot out one eye, he shot at the only eye. Gruumsh was still at that time cyclopean in nature.

Right. It's just the picture attached to the Moore article that "disagrees" (likely an artist told verbally about the one-eye thing and misunderstood).

Dragon #62, page 28 the article by Roger Moore titled The Gods of the Orcs

The shamans tell other tales, too, that
shed light on why things are as they are
in the world. Shamans tell of the battle
between Corellon Larethian (the chief
elven god, whom the shamans call The
Big Fairy) and Gruumsh, in which
Corellon tried to shoot out Gruumsh’s
eye (sacrilege!) with his bow, but failed
of course. It is not considered important
that Gruumsh started the fight by trying
to paralyze the elven god with his spear;
the shamans say Corellon deserved it for
not being properly deferential. Because
of this battle, orcs of all sects and cults
hate elves over all other non-orc races.

and also from the 1977 Monster Manual where some orc tribes were named things like the Bleeding Eye and such.

Bleeding Head, Evil Eye, Rotting Eye.

Known orc tribes include the following: Vile Rune, Bloody Head, Death Moon, Broken Bone, Evil Eye, Leprous Hand, Rotting Eye, Dripping Blade.

You know there was another thread on this....

-Gruumsh was long a cyclops...but the loosing an eye thing did show up at some point. Though it may have went away. Then come back. And don't forget those pictures of Gruumsh with two eyes.

-for years, neither Gruumsh nor fancy-pants were officially part of the World of Greyhawk, long the only official campaign setting. They are not mentioned in the 1983 boxed set, where demihumans (as they where called) worshiped the same gods as humans. They where just generic alternatives to the "human-centric" pantheons in Deities and Demigods. Later, after the expanded non-human pantheons were done in Dragon and published in Unearthed Arcana, they where folded in.

-And for that matter, they wheren't (and aren't) part of Dragonlance, the second official campaign setting. Where they even mentioned in the first FR boxed set?

Didn't have to assume. Just because Gygax got the details of that encounter wrong doesn't mean it didn't happen. Look it up. Any reputable history book will tell you that Gruumsh had two eyes right up until CL shot one out. :) -> ;)

1992 2e Monster Mythology is the earliest I can see mention of the elf god shooting it out.

There is the 1e DDG picture of him as a cyclops. There is dragon #62 during 1e era with a picture of him with one eye in a normal position and a helmet covering up where another would be while the article itself says specifically Corellan shot near to, but did not shoot out, Gruumsh's single eye. Are there other 1e pictures of Gruumsh?
