If you want cheap plastic 1:72 miniatures, check out a toy soldier specialty store, like ATS Toy Soldiers. The figures are made from "little army man" plastic, not hard resin, but you can get -- oh, my lord, I just spotted this -- 42 gladiators in 21 poses, with 4 lions, for $9!

Whoa nelly! Excellent cheap miniatures site - would flesh some things out nicely - I like the 18th century english pirates (including a few wenches) and the viking warriors. I've seen their stuff in hobby shops but (a) didn't realize the wealth of other time periods they had available and (b) most of the boxes tended to be old and I made an assumption that since they were in MY hobbyshop for 10 years that the company must be defunct. Glad to know they are not.

Espescially since they actually have ... WAR ELEPHANTS...and of course the Excalibur Castle Set

The plan for LotR at that point was to have 3 seperate games to release in concert w/ the 3 films. They hinted that one of the games would be skirmish level (the current version), one 'warhammer level', and one similar to warmaster.
It didn't even occur to me that they'd be truly different games. I just assumed they'd come out with new units and new scenarios -- with a few "crunchy bits" along the way.
Any word as to whether or not the Chainmail rights might be sold off to another interested party?
I thought the assumption was that they were going to come back with some kind of Chainmail II that would appeal to a broader audience.

I'm glad you like it. I've been eyeing it for awhile, but I haven't bought anything from them yet.
I think that could be an awesome D&D adventure set piece:
  • 224 Figures and Horses in Black and Silver Soft Plastic
  • Castle in Tan Soft Plastic
And all for $27! If only they weren't soft plastic.

Quick search shows these guys.

I like the 'Ancient Life' on the 'New Releases' page - its got beds, stools and other props. Hmmm...a whole new world to plunder. Anywho, the 'Accurate' tab on that page shows some pictures...the HAT page also shows the war elephants on their sprues.

Of course, if you've got the cash for the castle ... and look - camel-cav!

So, do hard plastic figures require a completely different process with different molds, or is it mainly an issue of what your pour into the mold? Because I think a lot of gamers would like these figures in hard resin (a la Warhammer's plastic figures).

Probably a bit of both. I had some molds a long long time ago and they came with a booklet describing how you might use them for plastics. If memory serves the key was temperature control and being able to grind up your plastics into basically powder.
