In praise of Metagaming...

Since I pride myself on having this quality of non-jerkism, thanks for the praise. I get irked every time one plays the a-hole, citing character or other metagame rationales. This needs to be repeated every so often.

Not everyone wants to play a cooperative game where the party works together and gets things done.

They do to sit at the table with my regular gaming group and here's to them!

Huzzah! :)

Damn. Now, see, I thought that this was going to be a thread about Metagaming (the company and proper noun), not metagaming (the gamer slang).

I agree with your sentiment, but I think you are trying to redefine the accepted definition of Metagaming. This is not really metagaming, but gamer manners. But I agree we need more of that kind of manners.

No. Absolutely not. You are a poopyhead. *throws dead fish at Kahuna Burger*

Just inserting the requisite disagreement which we need in all threads. Actually, I agree with you 100%, KB. There's good metagaming and bad metagaming, and you just described the kind I want (and get) at my table.

I can agree that nobody should be ruining the fun of others in the name of characterization. I just think we should also recognize that some groups of players can enjoy a game where there characters do not get along.

It all depends on what you're going for.

How about the term "conscious gaming"? Like, you're playing a game, and you know you're playing a game, but you don't take special advantage of that for any in-game benefit.
