In the Names of the Fathers - [d20 Cthulhu]

Shane looks around his office as if hoping to see some sign of Dr. Hadley there. He's been a bit worried, too. It's not like Dr. Hadley to miss appointments without a word. He feels a sudden sense of foreboding that manifests physically as a clenching at his gut, but he dismisses the dark premonition as mere worry. "No, I h-hav-haven'... I have not heard from Dr. Hadley. I c-c-can try calling his home, if you'...d like."

On the Road 12:30
Cynthia gets in the car and buckles her seat belt before Sharrel starts the engine. "I didn't realize Mittens was a stray. It's much harder to tell with cats than dogs. All that inbreeding makes it pretty easy to tel if your dog's a mongrel."
...
The ride to Dr. Hadley's house takes about 10 minutes by car(as the campus is on the edge of the 'city', though on foot, it would have taken 25 and been much colder. When the girls arrive, they notice that the car, a Volvo station wagon is in the driveway, an older model, held together with paint and rust, just where it should be. Everything seems to be in order.

Cynthia unbuckles her seat belt and gets out, "Everything looks okay." She smiles, "And on a day like this, I bet Mrs. Hadley will make hot cocoa before she sends us back to campus."

Dr. McDonald's Office 12:28
The woman's voice is warm on the other end of the line, "That would be awfully sweet of you to do. You know, the girls were right about you." She is silent for a moment, and when she speaks again, she sounds a bit nervous, "There's been some talk about you, Dr. McDonald." She clears her throat nervously, "It seems like you're the most eligible bachelor on campus right about now."
There's a fairly long pause, and Shane thinks she might have hung up, but then, "Would you... well, I'm usually very shy, I can't imagine why I'm being so forward. It's just. Well..." She pauses again and it all comes out in a gush, "Would you like to go to dinner sometime Dr. McDonald?"
Shane can almost feel her mortification at the other end of the line. He recalls that Moira is actually very pretty, with startlingly blue eyes, but she's very quiet unless she's talking about her job.

"Yea, Mittens is a stray, well sorta. I found her right after she was born. I thought you noticed I was feeding her formula she is stll to small for regular food." Stoping the car and getting out, she looks over at Cynthia.

"Well I could sure go for some Coco, it isn't very nice out. Anyway, I still have to talk to Mrs. Hadley. I am sure everythings fine though."

She walks up the familiar steps and knocks on the door, smiling.

Dr. Hadley's House 12:46
Cynthia follows Sharrel up to the door, only a step behind her. "Sorry, Sharrel, I didn't pay any attention. I've been absorbed in my dissertation. I'm so glad that's turned in for review now."

Sharrel knocks on the door. There's no response.

OOC: But then, who expected a response? Post in the OOC thread if you did.

"Thats odd, usually MRS. Hadley is here with Coco buy now, and the car is here. I'll try again, and then try the door." Sharrel says, starting to sound a little less perky and a touch more concerned, but still mostly upbeat.

She knocks on the door, and if there is no answer will try to open it. Calling out "Poffesor Hadlely, Mrs. Hadley, Its me Sharrel are you here?"

The Hadleys' 12:49
Once more, there is no response. Worried, Sharrel tries the door, only to find it locked. That's not unusual. But Mrs. Hadley is usually very prompt with the door. And when Sharrel tries to open it, she notices that there aren't any lights on. Usually, the cozy little foyer has a lamp turned on.

Cynthia frowns. Reaching into her pocket, she pulls out a key, "Come on. I watched their house over Christmas. This it he key to the back door. I hate it when my intuition is right. Have you got your cell phone handy? We might need it."

She motions Sharrel to precede her around the back of the house.

Shane gets a date

[I'm glad to see that my alter-ego's dating life is better than my own.]

First Kathryn Motts, now Moira. It just seems odd that two women would ask him out within two weeks--he's never had this much success with the opposite sex before. His stuttering speech and gangly appearance aren't exactly great draws. So now the question is whether he should accept Moira's invitation, or wait to see what Kathryn might do. What he should have done in the first place was call Kathryn rather than wait for her to call him. It's not like one date is a commitment, but...

"I'd love to, Moira," Shane says, glad to get a sentence out without a stutter. "But I'm not sure whe-whether I'm free yet." In more ways than one. "Let me g-g-get in touch in Dr. Hadley, and I'll call you this aft-after... I'll call you later and answer both questions."

Once he's off the phone, he sits at his desk and reaches for his rolodex, turning it backwards from T. He pauses at the M's before continuing to the H's. First Dr. Hadley, then Miss Motts. He picks up the phone and dials.

Sharrel nods and pulls out her cell phone, ready to call 912(the real emergency number :D). She follows Cynthia around the back of the house.

"Cyn I'm worried, what if something happened? This isn't like them at all."

Dr. McDonald's Office 12:51
It proves to be somewhat difficult to get Moira off the phone. She insists on chatting about how worried she is about Dr. Hadley, then continues on to thank you profusely and tell you that she just couldn't have called him herself. Finally, she can't let you go without a few minutes of mindless chit chat. For a woman who is reputed to be quiet in person, she has the phone personality of a switch-board operator.

When he finally gets finished with the conversation, it's been almost 30 minutes since she called. He locates the number in his rolodex. He picks up the phone, then dials the number before putting the receiver to his ear.

The phone rings once...

The Hadleys' 12:51
As the girls finally make it the back door, the phone begins to ring. Cynthia shoves the key in the lock before she has time to realize that the glass has been shattered on the back door.
She swings the door open even as she realizes it, but by then' it's too late.

There is broken glass on the floor, where the pane fell to the cozy rug. They have a straight view to the front door, but other than the glass, nothing seems amiss. The phone and answering machine sit on the kitchen counter, just to their left.

Cynthia looks to Sharrel, "You'd better get the phone. I'll check the house. Have whoever is on the other end of the phone dial 912. I don't want us to be out of contact..."

Cynthia rushes off.
