Inspirational Fantasy Movies

OK, so what about the real classics?

Yor, Hunter from the Future
Ator the Fighting Eagle
Iron Warrior
The Blademaster

Without these, gaming might as well not exist.

Indiana Jones Tril
The Mummy and its sequel
Sahara

TV:
Angel.....the ultimate dark story of redemption and salvation...plus cool fights..

Greetings...

I don't necessarily get my inspiration from Fantasy movies... only because there aren't a lot of them out there to begin with. But there are a couple of things out there that you might like...

Ironically enough, I was trying to think of the title for Hawk, the Slayer, and it was the first one listed...

I don't think anyone mentioned:
Beowulf & Grendel (I thought I was watching 13th Warrior again!)

For a little more modern flare...
The Cave

And some classic movies...
Big Trouble in Little China
Ice Pirates

Flash Gordon (looks like they are remaking it for 2008!)

The Perils of Gwendoline in the Land of the Yik Yak

Well, there is a reason why no one has mentioned D&D the movie...or it's sequeal... it's kinda like that drunk pedophile uncle in your family that no one wants to talk about...

Oh yes... and all those living dead... zombie movies... my personal favourite is an Indian one where the zombies stop feasting on brains to do a quick little song and dance routine.

Hehehe, how could I forget about Ice Pirates? What a classic! I also like Battle Beyond the Stars and Logan's Run if I'm in more of a Sci Fi mood. How about Land of the Lost? Or the Tarzan TV series? Or my favorite Sid and Marty Krofft Bigfoot and Wildboy ! When I was a freshman in highschool, my family lived in Germany while my step dad was in the Air Force. Bigfoot and Wild boy came on right after Robin of Sherwood on Saturday Mornings. I really miss those days.

OK, here's some of mine...

Dragonslayer
Willow
Sword and the Sorcerer
Deathstalker
Hawk the Slayer
Beastmaster
Labyrinth
The Dark Crystal
Fire and Ice
Ladyhawk
Legend
Krull

The second one isn't that bad. Sure it has actors that no-one has heard about and Damodar now seems to be a wizard instead of a fighter, but the use of iconic D&D references makes this an enjoyable watch for gamers. Puzzle solving, trap finding, the darkmantles are cool, and while there are some sucky bits it is still several classes above many of the other movies that have been bandied about here (if only for their cheese factor). For buying it on DVD I am waiting until the 1st movie is at or (preferably) below the AUD5 mark. The second I would get for AUD15 if you want to use that for some sort of comparison (and most of the 80s cheese I would put in the AUD5-10 bracket as well).

For movies with plot - check out the Russian film Night Watch: Nochnoi Dozor. It is a vampire flick and is definitely not in the Hollywood style. This would be good for inspiration for plot heavy campaigns or ones where the players have to tread the line between moral decisions and achieving their goals.

*LOL*

So true. Haven't seen the second one, but by the laws of physics it cannot be worst than the first one.

The writers and directors of that movie should seriously be tied to stakes and pelted with d20s until every D&Der in the world has had a throw.

Most of the fantasy inspiration I get comes from various Hong Kong wuxia films and anime, but for the most part I'd not really count most of them as 'fantasy' movies.

LOTR, of course, for finally doing epic fantasy right for the very first time.
Harry Potter, for visual spell effects, flight effects.
Ladyhawke, for great characters
Narnia, for creature effects
Willow, for various spell effects and Willow's trickery at the end
